Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

This triggered when I was asleep unfortunately. The workload on the machine at this time was intermittent use of totem or vlc, gedit of /usr/share/gnome-applets/gweather/Locations.xml, firefox (with ~120 tabs open) and azureus.

The uptime on this machine was less than two days.

The machine didn't swap much since I didn't use many of the large apps (the gedit mostly) and the rest fit into memory for the most part.

It's too bad the lumpy reclaim patches didn't make it into 2.6.22.

I'll attach the kernel log in my next post.

I have similar problem but it's always related to the rtl8139 driver it seems, check here: #164018

Hope, it's the same bug, I've experienced with 2.6.22 as well. Output of command dmesg is attached. It's

Linux vega 2.6.24-12-generic #1 SMP Wed Mar 12 23:01:54 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

I will try to upgrade to the latest hardy (2.6.24-16 I guess) kernel soon as well.

Hi Guys,

Care to confirm on the Hardy final release? Also, I'm reassigning this to the "linux" source package since beginning with Hardy, kernel bugs should be reported against the "linux" package not linux-source-2.6.xx. Thanks.

Could it be related to:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/235074

If it is, then it's confirmed for Hardy.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I've now been running 2.6.27-2-generic for 36 hours and trying to put some load on it, and haven't seen any hiccups yet. The problem still exists in 2.6.24, but I guess it won't be fixed, and 2.6.26 and 2.6.27 both seem fine.

Let's close this and I'll re-open a new bug against 2.6.27 if I get problems in the future.

Sounds good. Thanks for testing and the feedback. Marking this "Fix Released" for Intrepid. Against 2.6.22 this will be closed. Thanks.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
