Bug Description

I heard that the open source driver for rt2500 works with recent updates in Gutsy Beta, so I gave it a shot. After installation, network manager could see available networks, but couldn't connect to my WPA protected network, which has hidden essid. Setting up configuration manually didn't work either. I had to blacklist the module (rt2500pci) and use ndiswrapper instead.

My system:
Ubuntu Gutsy (most recent snapshot)
Linux Tomahna 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Wed Oct 10 06:00:47 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

Card used:
Edimax EW-7128g (rt2500 chipset)

Both the outputs were taken after the original module has been blacklisted and ndiswrapper driver installed.

Same problem. it worked under Feisty, and I upgraded. Network manager couldn't control it because it was in /etc/interfaces, so since it didn't work that way I removed /etc/interfaces. No dice; it tries to connect and eventually gives up. I have not tried blacklisting/ndiswrapper; let's get this working with the native stuff.

~$ uname -a
Linux paragon 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 23:05:12 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

Since this is my sacrificial Ubuntu testing laptop, I reinstalled Gutsy from scratch to validate; still unable to connect with essid broadcasting turned off.

Turned on essid broadcasting, no other changes; able to connect just fine.

Just confirmed with Hardy; bug still there. Broadcasting SSID works, not broadcasting no connection.

Hi Shawn, thanks for testing with Hardy. Per the kernel team's bug policy, can you please attach the following information for the newer Hardy kernel. Please be sure to attach each file as a separate attachment.

* uname -a > uname-a.log
* cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
* dmesg > dmesg.log
* sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log

For more information regarding the kernel team bug policy, please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies .

Also, Hardy Alpha3 should be coming out in the next day or two. http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . You might want to test from the Alpha3 LiveCD and verify this bug still exists for the newer release. Thanks!

I've opened a new task against the actively developed kernel and am closing the task against linux-source-2.6.22. Thanks!

A fix has been released for problems connecting to hidden APs via NetworkManager [fixed in Hardy].
See Bug #50214
Or for Atheros chipsets see: Bug #208306

This bug may be a duplicate. Can those still affected check these bugs out and report back.
It may also be that two bugs have been blended here: the hidden AP issue & an rt2500 driver issue.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
