Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg-driver-fglrx

I did an upgrade from feisty to gutsy RC. The upgrading went well but after rebooting X would not come up (same in recovery mode).
The splash screen is shown OK but as soon as X starts the screen turns black.
I can't jump back to a terminal (using ctrl-alt-F1) or can't restart X (using ctrl-alt-backspace), i only can reboot.
I'm running on a Dell inspiron 9400 with an ATI X1400 graphics card, using the fglrx driver (8.37.6).
I will attach the Xorg log file..

please let me know how i can help to sort this out for the final release so everything goes automagically

running
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
solves the problem.
however some strange things happened when doing this:
the autodetection of my graphics card failed, i had to manually select the flgrx driver.
Also the detection of the monitor failed; the screen went black and i had to reboot.
When manually entering the correct options it works and i can now start x.
i hope this is solved for the final release..

the performance in X seems much slower then it was in feisty however, there is a lot of flickering..

Hi glenner,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISOs are available from cdimage.ubuntu.com)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

The output of lspci -vvnn would also be worth having.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
