Bug Description

Configuration:
HP 6720s, Gutsy Gibbon
My laptop has 82562GT ethernet card and it does not work. I can set my static IP adress, but i can not ping to my gateway. I can not ping anything. Wirelles connection works good. The problem is in linux-source version. 2.6.22-10 is ok, but 2.6.22-14 does not work.

There are some similar problems:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=564331
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?p=99109&

UPDATE: It can be fixed (and it works good) with pci=noacpi parameter during loading kernel.

SOLUTION: Update BIOS to version F.04 by downloading the file http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3442856&prodNameId=3442857&swEnvOID=2096&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=ob-54942-1 (for the details just following the comments). If you do not have Windows (neccessary) installed, you can try to use http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3442832&swItem=ob-56527-1&prodNameId=3442833&swEnvOID=1093&swLang=8&taskId=135&mode=4&idx=1 utitlity - you can create bootable CD and it SHOULD work too. Please, check it and send report, if it is ok.

I also tried 7.6.9.1 from e1000.sf.net, but that did not improve things.

Try to use the F.03 BIOS. It is solving a problem with the ethernet controller.

upgraded bios to F.04, and as in hp forums people suggests, it works (if it works for xp, works for anything) .
I'm now using livecd .

When screen resolution problem is cleared, i'll install it again .

pablosanchezuy ,

I'm sorry for being lost at the HP website, but *where* did you download the F.04 bios update??

watch the wrap .

It's sp37643.exe (2.1 MB) .

Basically you have to go to hp site, click on Drivers and support,
http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html?pageDisplay=drivers
then enter 6820s to search for the model (6720, etc) and voila .

The problem i was chasing, was the one listed on hp forums :

HTH

Regards.

Pablo Sánchez .

BTW, found the screen resolution problem, so i'll go back to gutsy this week again.

Pablo, many thanx!

BTW, I have set up a laptop page in the ubuntu wiki for the 6720s:

feel free to add bits of info there too.

I was affected by this bug on HP 6820s hardware. I found out I was using version F.02 of the BIOS After installing version F.07 of the BIOS, the ethernet port works out of the box.

For anyone worried about how to do a BIOS update without running Windows. I basically downloaded "sp38153.exe" from the driver page, which was "ROMPaq for HP Notebook System BIOS - FreeDOS Bootable Media".

You can run this using WINE or any other emulator. All it does is unpack a few files into a folder you specify. Once unpacked, you will find an ISO there.

There are two ISO's that are unpackad. I assume that one is for 6820s and one for 6520s. For the 6820s hardware, you need the ISO in the sp38153d folder.

I deduced this from the output of dmesg by running "dmesg | grep 30D". Look up the value 30D7 or 30D8 in the file map.ini within the sp38153 folder. I found out that sp38153d was the right one for my hardware.

I think a BIOS update is the solution here, as all the confirmations of the bug seem to be for HP hardware.

So, can we go ahead and close this bug??

I don't think i should close a bug report i have not originally submitted , but the problem, clearly here seems to be fixed by bios updates.

I'm using F.04 bios with Gutsy 64bit, nicely.

Glad the problem has been found .

Regars,

Pablo Sánchez.

Thanks everyone for the updates. Jiri, since you are the original bug reporter, can you comment if and update to your BIOS resolves the issue? If so, we'll go ahead and close this report. Thanks.
