Bug Description

Hi,

I have a brand new UPS, a MGE Ellipse MAX 1100, connected via USB. It seems to cause long delays when loading the alternate CD and causes USB errors to be printed during the boot.

I also suspect it might be giving me some suspend issues.

grepping kern.log for usb 1-1 on a normal boot gives:
Oct 12 11:30:51 fox kernel: [ 21.936665] usb 1-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
Oct 12 11:30:51 fox kernel: [ 22.235133] usb 1-1: unable to read config index 0 descriptor/all
Oct 12 11:30:51 fox kernel: [ 22.235165] usb 1-1: can't read configurations, error -71
Oct 12 11:30:51 fox kernel: [ 23.056401] usb 1-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
Oct 12 11:30:51 fox kernel: [ 31.279284] usb 1-1: unable to read config index 0 descriptor/start
Oct 12 11:30:51 fox kernel: [ 31.279317] usb 1-1: chopping to 0 config(s)
Oct 12 11:30:51 fox kernel: [ 47.378076] usb 1-1: string descriptor 0 read error: -110
Oct 12 11:31:04 fox kernel: [ 63.520843] usb 1-1: string descriptor 0 read error: -110
Oct 12 11:31:20 fox kernel: [ 79.652612] usb 1-1: string descriptor 0 read error: -110
Oct 12 11:31:20 fox kernel: [ 79.652729] usb 1-1: no configuration chosen from 0 choices

lsusb -v shows it as:
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0463:ffff MGE UPS Systems UPS
Device Descriptor:
  bLength 18
  bDescriptorType 1
  bcdUSB 1.10
bDeviceClass 0 (Defined at Interface level)
  bDeviceSubClass 0
  bDeviceProtocol 0
  bMaxPacketSize0 8
  idVendor 0x0463 MGE UPS Systems
  idProduct 0xffff UPS
  bcdDevice 42.41
  iManufacturer 1 MGE UPS SYSTEMS
  iProduct 2 Ellipse MAX
  iSerial 4 PbAc
  bNumConfigurations 0
Device Status: 0x0001
  Self Powered

The model is supposedly a quite enterprise-ish and common UPS.

Bye,

Hi Loic,

Care to test the new 2.6.24 kernel in Hardy and verify if this issue still exists? Thanks.

I can't really test it regularly since bug #174367 prevents regular of this kernel on my system.

Reopening, this is still an issue with linux-image-2.6.24-2-generic 2.6.24-2.3.

Thanks for testing. Can you also attach your entire dmesg output?

A new task against the actively developed kernel is currently open. However, against linux-source-2.6.22 this will be closed as it does not meet the criteria for a stable release update. You can learn more about the stable release update process at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelUpdates and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates . Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

i get a similar error during startup.

 usb 4-1: device descriptor read/64, error -110

the 4-1 and /64 part have various numbers... this increases the boot by a lot... i have ubuntu 8.10 fully updated..
have an usb mouse (logitec)
have an usb wireless router. but they both work perfectly fine...
(usb storage device 2gb cruz micro, but also gives the errors when this device is not in...)

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.

Loic, Could you test with a Jaunty beta. The link order of the modules is now changed so that ehci is loaded before uhci.

i know i am not the guy you asked... but i tried to install the beta..
and i have less usb-device errors, but there still there...
there where about 24 now there are something like 6 errors...
so this saves more then a minute of boot time...

also its hard to tell cause of the new boot splash, but i think the errors come later in the boot process, but i guess there is no way to compare that anymore :(

though the beta did kinda mess up my vlc player....
it now opens up a new window to display just the movie.. (so now you have 1 for controlls and 1 for the movie)
much like mplayer...

oke i did a fresh install of ubuntu 9.04, partitioned ext4 both / and /home/ ...
and i no longer have these bugs during startup!!!
so i guess you can close this bug for me... dont know about the others...

do i do find it suspisious and weird, that the update didnt do the exact same thing... cause they should be indentical right? this aint windows right? :@ DAMNIT!!! (cause i cant imagine ext4 fixed this...)

....
still the fun aint there yet cause now some random gnome freezes (xept for my mouse...) have taken its place JOY!
but i guess that should be posted in a different bug report..
still i am quite happy about the new boottime... from over 4 min to 50 or so seconds (inc everything, from bootloader it takes around 30 sec...)
