Bug Description

I'm running Gutsy 20071015 on a Toshiba Tecra A9. After rebooting from hibernation, the screen is blank and I can't Ctrl-Alt-F* to change to the console.

I'm having similar problems with Suspend on my Toshiba Tecra A9 on Ubuntu 7.10 (all the updates applied)

Upon invoking suspend, the laptop seemed to go into a
deep power savings mode:
1. The screen went blank
2. The harddrive sounded like it turned off.

I waited about 5 seconds, and pressed a bunch of keys
to get it to turn on..No luck. Then I pushed the
power button. The harddrive seemed to spin up again,
but video was not resumed and I had to do a hard
shutdown (hold the power button for about 5 seconds).

Upon booting up the PC the first time after the crash, it took significantly longer to boot (perhaps a fsck?)

When I try to enter suspend mode now, Ubuntu seems
like it refuses to go into suspend mode and just turns
on the screen saver. I'm not exactly sure if this is
expected behavior or not. (Perhaps ubuntu detected
that suspend is not supported and no longer wants to
kick me into suspend mode anymore?)

Care to verify if this is still an issue in the latest Hardy Alpha release? Thanks.

Loading up the latest version of Hardy (Alpha 5) on my
Toshiba Tecra A9, and did not seem to help.

Here was my procedure (As close as I can remember):

1. Downloaded the desktop cd ISO from:
and burned it to a CD.
2. Rebooted my laptop (Toshiba Tecra A9) and booted
on the CD
3. Choose English, then selected "Try Ubuntu without
any change to your computer"
4. Inserted USB drive
5. Opened up terminal and:
 a. sudo dmesg > /media/disk/dmesg.output
 b. sudo lspci -vvvnn >
/media/disk/lspci_vvvnn.output.txt
 c. sudo lshal > /media/disk/sudo_lshal.output.txt
 d. sudo cat /var/log/syslog >
/media/disk/var_log_syslog.output.txt
6. sudo umount /media/disk and then unplugged the
usbthumb drive.
7. Changed the password of user "ubuntu" to password:
"ubuntu"
 a. sudo passwd ubuntu
8. Installed openssh server
 a. sudo apt-get install openssh-server
 b. Ensured I could ssh into localhost
9. Used the powerbutton in the upper right hand
corner of gnome and then selected suspend
10. Waited till my laptop's power light turned off,
and then the light fades off and on "orange". I
believe the orange light fading off and on signals to
the user that suspend mode has been activating.
11. Pressed the power button to get out of suspend
mode, or "wake up".
12. Observed that the cd-rom and harddrive sounds
like they spin up, but video does not.
13. On another machine, ssh into the Toshiba Tecra
A9. Successfully logged in as "ubuntu"
14. Plugged in the usb thumbdrive back into the tecra
and manually mounted it to /media/disk
15. Saved additional logs:
 sudo dmesg > /meda/disk/dmesg_after.output.txt
 sudo cat /var/log/syslog >
/media/disk/var_log_syslog_AFTER.output.txt
16. ON my ssh session to the tosbhiba tecra, safely
shutdown the laptop:
 sudo shutdown now -h

It seems that my laptop can resume from suspend,
except the video does not come back. If there's any
additional information I can gather for you guys,
please let me know. I'm very interested in seeing
this work for the next revision of Ubuntu.

Thanks,

John

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
