Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic

After upgrading from feisty to gutsy I noticed that ksoftirqd on CPU 0 is always using about 30% of of that CPU even when the system is otherwise idle. I have upgraded the 2.6.22 kernel about 3 times over the past 2 weeks and it has always had the same results. I don't remember seeing this with 2.6.20 (with feisty)

I have a MSI P6N SLI Platinum (NF650ISLI) motherboard with an Intel Dual-Core E2160.

I just patched to the latest kernel (2.6.22-14-generic) and it has been up for 91min and the ksofirqd/0 process has already used 28min of CPU time.

I have the same problem (clean gutsy install), also about 25% CPU usage all the time. The bug is caused by the cx8800 module, which is used for a TV card. I have found the same report on madriva bugzilla:
http://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=32300

They have resolved this issue and fixed it with a patch in madriva. Please, include this patch also in Ubuntu, as soon as possible, this is really important. Thank you.

I can confirm this.
Passing "acpi=off" at boot solves the problem, however this makes the cpu run with only one core.

My CPU is a AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+,
I have a Multimedia video controller: Conexant CX23880/1/2/3 PCI Video and Audio
Decoder (rev 05)
And my motherboard is a MSI nforce3 K8N Neo2

I was able also to solve this problem by installing linux-image-2.6.22-14-386 rather than linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic

ah, and as read on the mandriva bug system, if you use a generic kernel, a simple "rmmod cx8800" will also solve the problem.

Hmmm, it seems I've able to resolve my problem unistalling the propietary nvidia drivers completly from from system, via "restricted modules" on System -> Admin menu. I now use "nv" one.

Hope this helps.

Can those experiencing this issue try booting with the following kernel boot option:
nohz=off

This disables the 'tickless' aspect of the tickless kernel (enabled by default in Gutsy & perhaps other releases). ksoftirqd appears to be getting bombarded by by requests (probably from not quite fully polished hardware drivers). This won't fix any hardware driver issues but may stop the CPU being bothered so much by errant requests.

I have not modules cx8800 or et131x loaded, but there is same bug in Hardy final release! ksoftirqd/0 eats about 25%, but not all time. This happens sometimes and until I restart laptop. Actually, I can't restart normally, because after Ubuntu continues unloading screen fills by gray color with vertical lines of different colors...

My machine is:
Aser Aspire 5290G
Core2Duo T5550 1,83GHz
Nvidia 8600GS

Maybe it is because proprietary video driver?... I have 169.12 from Nvidia's official site installed manually.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I've upgraded my system to Hardy (kernel 2.6.24-19) and I no longer see the problem. I think it was an issue with 2.6.22 only.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : Kernel team bugs

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
