Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic

Hardware is as listed above, it has an intel on board sound chip and it works reproduceable (by rebooting with other Kernel) with linux-image-2.6.22-13-generic, it doesn't work with the earlier *-386 versions as well.
So the error must be in the changes from linux-image-2.6.22-13-generic to linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic.
I think this bug is related with some of these:

I can't confirm this, I have just installed linux-backports-modules and linux-backports-modules-generic and am runningt $(uname -) "2.6.22-14-generic" and sound definitely doesn't work.
Before I rebooted to try this Kernel I was running 2.22-13-generic with sound working.
So this definitely is no fix for my problem, sorry guys but the problem lies somwhere else, do you know any place where I can get a list of all changes from -13 to -14, best would be to jave a git repositry of the kernel used in Ubuntu so I could run git-bisect.

I am definitely running a 2.6.22-14-generic on an iMac 24"
Linux 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 23:05:12 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux
Just upgraded to Gutsy and sound didn't work (as it didn't work in Feisty without patching alsa). Installed linux-backports-modules, rebooted, and sound worked

The 24" iMac is the 2. generation, yours does have a Core 2 Duo mine has a Core Duo, maybe their sound chips are different too.

It unfortunately appears that this bug is not yet resolved. Does this issue still exist in the Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS release? If so, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha2 is also scheduled for release today. It will appear at the following when available: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha2 . It contains the actively developed 2.6.26 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could test this upcoming release via a LiveCD and verify if the issue still exists. If so, please include the appropriate debugging information as outlined at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems . Thanks in advance.
