Bug Description

Hi,
I've got a HP 6510b notebook and a problem with closing the lid. Everytime I do that, the whole system freezes:
I can see gnome, etc, but mouse and keyboard aren't reacting and the caps-lock-led is on.
Im running the 2.6.22-14-generic kernel and the laptop "is" a santa rosa :)
----
This problem also occurs with Hardy Heron 08.04 Alpha 4 (A4) on a HP Compaq 2510p. Kernel 2.6.24-7-generic running.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at [WWW] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in linux-source-2.6.22.

Same here with a HP 2510p running 7.10. It doesn't happen every time I close the lid though, only about every fourth time.

The system completely locks up and the caps lock led is on. The system does not react to pings and open ssh-sessions break, so it isn't just X breaking.

I also had this problem with the 8.04 alpha 2 livecd.

Followup to the last entry: I just switched to the text-console using ctrl-alt-F1 after booting and tried closing and opening the lid multiple times. I got the system to freeze after a few tries (opening and closing the lid about 10 times). I hard rebooted and tried the same thing again, and it locked up again, but with a different error. The error messages where:

"BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference"
"BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 00004005"

In the attachment are two photos I made of the locked up system showing the errors.

I am going to attach dmesg, lspci and other outputs.

I just installed linux-image-386 and the matching restricted-modules, now this doesn't happen anymore. I han happily close and reopen the lid multiple times withouth freezing. I have modified my /etc/acpi/lid.sh and /etc/acpi/videobtn.sh, but this shouldn't have an influence, since the freezes still happened with the generic kernel.

I've opened a new task against the actively developed kernel 2.6.24...

Interesting that the problem is fixed in 2.6.22-14-386 but exists in 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP.

Can you retest with Hardy Alpha3 when it comes out in the next day or two and report if the bug still exists? Also, have you tried installing the x86_64 version? (amd64)

I'm in the middle of my university-exams, but I'll try to test with the Hardy Alpha3 LiveCD and with the Gutsy X86_64 LiveCD.

By the way, I am now using using the 2.6.24-386 Zen Kernel [1] because I had some trouble waking from standby with 2.6.22-14-386. With the Zen-Kernel, waking from standby and opening/closing the lid works flawlessly.

This is probably a duplicate of bug #157691

I'm running 2.6.24-8-generic on gutsy (built it myself from git) and I'm still seeing this issue. Before I upgraded to the Ubuntu kernel, I was running 2.6.24-rc3 and 2.6.24-rc6 with no problems. I'll probably do some bisecting to find the culprit, but it seems this is already a known issue and there's no good workaround (see http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6001 and and bug #157691)

HP 6510b, HH 8.04, 2.6.24-8-generic
#echo 1 > /proc/acpi/video/C098/DOS
and put this line in your /etc/rc.local
it seems it works for me but still this is a bug

The above fix proposed by archdrone also works for the HP Compaq 2510p (just change the C098 with C099).

And this is a duplicate of bug #157691. I will tag it as such, since bug #157691 has much better descriptions of the problem.
