1.Connect the audio capable monitor via HDMI or DP.
2.Install vlc player
3.Select HDMI as default audio endpoint
4.Play any audio file using vlc

 Expected:
    Audio should be played smoothly

Actually:
Along with audio play-back noise output was observed

FIX: The fix is submitted to upstream. The commit hash #8eb22214b7cb0c0a28be6caf3b81201629d8ea7c is in torvalds master branch tree :
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commits/master/sound/pci/hda/hda_intel.c

Please pick this commit. The commit was also sent to stable kernel release.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1577288/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

I built a Xenial test kernel with a pick of commit 8eb22214b. The test kernel can be downloaded from:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1577288/

Can you test this kernel and see if it resolves this bug?

With your packages provided in above link, there is not HDMI audio endpoint. So, couldn't verify the issue.

The test kernel in comment #5 was the stock Xenial kernel with a cherry pick of the commit requested. That may indicate the commit introduces a new bug. Are there any error messages in the logs with this test kernel?

Ok, with stock kernel, support(graphics, display) for Polaris GPU is not present. This support will be in kernel 4.7. That is the reason for no audio endpoint. Please pick the audio commit.

This bug is awaiting verification that the kernel in -proposed solves the problem. Please test the kernel and update this bug with the results. If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed-xenial' to 'verification-done-xenial'.

If verification is not done by 5 working days from today, this fix will be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!

Since , this test kernel doesn't have AMD GPU components for Polaris 10/11 built-in (please refer https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1577288/comments/8), I cannot test the fix.

But, I suggest to include the fix in the release.
