Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

When attempting to create a wireless network with a '-' in the name, the network manager changes to show the trying to connect icon (the 2 dots with the spinner flying around them) and then never completes. Hovering the mouse over this displays a pop up that says "Attempting to join the wireless network '(null)'".

The exact details to reproduce are very straight-forward:
1- Click on the networkmanager icon in the system tray
2- Click on "Create new wireless network"
3- Enter a name for the network that contains a '-', e.g., test-laptop
4- Observe that the icon then changes to trying to connect icon
5- Hover the mouse over the icon and see it says "Attempting to join the wireless network '(null)'"

I am having other issues with this laptop, in that the wireless behaviour seems entirely erratic at the best of times. I have however confirmed this bug on another computer that does work fine.

Hi there
do you still experience this issue with the current version of the application?, could you please try to reproduce this using the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron.

Thanks in advance

Re-opened the bug as it is still happening under the latest Hardy Heron release (2.4.24-16. Hardy Beta). Same effects as before in that the mouse-over states the it is joining the '(null)' network

Hi there
if you still experience this issue in an up-to-date Hardy Heron system, could you please include your /var/log/syslog file as a separated attachment, just after you experience this problem, also please include the output of the command lspci -vvnn as another attachment.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

This now appears fixed in the latest version of hardy (network-manager 0.6.6-ubuntu3).

Thanks :-)

Wait. I tried to connect to one (which does display properly) rather than create one. When creating a wireless network this problem still occurs. See attached logs.

Happens to me too, but I don't need a hyphen (-) in the network name - happens with any name I come up with. The tooltip also says it's joining the (null) network.

I'm on fully updated Hardy, trying to create an ad-hoc network for my iPhone to connect to.

My syslog output is identical to what peitschie posts, and ends in:
kernel: [ 4435.559939] wlan0: authentication with AP 00:00:00:00:00:00 timed out

I am experiencing the same problem, regardless of whether or not there is a hyphen in my network's name. Any type of encryption method produces the same problem, including no encryption at all.

Attached my syslog (with non-relevant information trimmed) and output from lspci -vvnn.
