I can confirm this bug on current hardy with compiz 1:0.7.0-0ubuntu1 installed.
Test case:
1.) Open ccsm
2.) Select "General Options" -> "Commands" -> "Run terminal command"
3.) Choose any terminal emulator you like (tested with gnome-terminal and xterm)
4.) Choose Ctrl+1 as keybinding and see: it's working
5.) Choose Ctrl+Escape as keybinding and see: it's not working

Thanks

As mentioned in bug 176195, this doesn't only affect <Control>Escape but also <Alt>Escape and <Shift>Escape.

I'd like to be able to use CTRL+Shift+Esc to open gnome-system-monitor (equivalent of Taks Manager on Windows). This bug is preventing me from doing that. With Metacity the mentioned shortcut works.

I retried compiz today in Intrepid. Meanwhile I changed my terminal short-key in gnome to ALT+T. It still doesn't work.

As compiz is enabled by default and the official way to set short-keys via the UI doesn't work with it, this is a serious bug to me!

same problem with arch linux. the issue seems to be compiz-fusion wont apply the command correctly. i want to bind "escape" to "close-window" but it doesn't work. I have compiz-fusion on tty1 and openbox running on tty2 and escape works fine on tty2 with openbox after being bound thru that window manager. escape does already seem to be bound through compiz-fusion by default for menus only! i think that might be the issue!

keep it going nice to see some rigid ui keys changing

This bug doesn't seem to be getting any love. It is still a problem with Jaunty.

I am trying to map <Control>Escape to "Show Main Menu" in the Gnome Compatibility plugin. It fails. This is super-annoying since this is the keystroke that Windows users will be used to. Just about anything else works--I settled on <Control>grave for now.

I had the same problem, wanted to set <shift><control>Escape as a shortcut for gnome-system-monitor.
I found the simplest way to do it in ubuntu using gnome shortcuts instead.
System -> Preferences -> Keyboard Shotcuts, just create a new shortcut (Add) there and it will work.

It still would be good to have that bug corrected in compiz ;)

+1 for fixing this bug. In the latest Ubuntu 14.04 it doesn't even work when using Ubuntu's keyboard settings. It would be nice, not just because it's how you open system monitor in Windowz (I couldn't care less about Windowz), but using Ctrl+Shift+Esc is just a nice logical shortcut for the system monitor.

For now I'll just set it to Ctrl+Shift+Del...

@Tory Gaurnier I don't believe this bug is related to the issue you are seeing as using Shift + Ctrl + Esc was working fine in 12.04 - 13.10 and seems to be a regression in 14.04. I have opened a new bug #1350527 against gnome-settings-daemon so we will see what happens.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug. The compiz program that we currently use in Ubuntu is a C++ re-write of the original compiz and was announced the 4th July 2010. Therefore, the bugs that were reported before that date, will be marked as "Won't Fix" as they probably exist in the original program which is not stored in launchpad. (The last LTS that used the old compiz is the 10.04 which is not supported anymore).

After some digging I found this:
http://dev.compiz-fusion.narkive.com/BXRBj9Xp/fusiondev-bug-545-escape-used-as-part-of-any-key-binding-has-no-effect

Where it suggests that this is by design.

This doesn't satisfy me. Reserving a lone escape is fine, but preventing Esc with modifier keys seems crazy. I'll keep looking for other code about it.
This "bug" has been around for the life of compiz and now through a C++ "rewrite" :-)

Also reported here: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=24397

I'll probably open a new bug since this has been closed. OTOH, only 10 people reported that it affected them.
It'd be nice if it got more love.
