Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

Gutsy fails to reboot on Dell Dimension 2400; I think it worked with Feisty. It stops correctly, but when starting again the grub menu doesn't come up, and I have to stop it (press 10 seconds the power button) and start again. When I start it, it will say that the computer failed to boot at "checkpoint [USBd]".

I don't use any restricted driver (graphic card is an in-build Intel).

This might be related to bug 131292. I've not tried the workaround that's proposed there yet.

Hi Siegfried,

Did you ever get around to trying the workaround? Please let us know if it worked or not. Thanks.

Sorry, I had forgoten about that.

The workaround (add option «reboot=b» to boot/grub/menu.lst) didn't work.

The Hardy Heron kernel was recently uploaded for testing. We'd really appreciate it if you could try testing with this newer kernel and verify if this issue still exists. Unfortunately, the Hardy Heron Alpha1 LiveCD was released with the older 2.6.22 kernel. You'll have to manually install the newer Hardy Heron kernel in order to test. This should not be the case for Alpha2. However, here are the instructions to install (if you choose to do so):

1) edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list and add the following line:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy main restricted

2) sudo apt-get update
3) sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.24-1-generic
4) reboot and select the new kernel from the grub menu

After you've tested, please feel free to revert back - ie boot into the old kernel, sudo apt-get remove linux-image-2.6.24-1-generic, and remove the line from /etc/apt/sources.list . Please update this report with your results. Thanks in advance!

Hi Siegfried,

Thanks for testing anyways :) Have you tried either of the following? I saw them posted online as possible solutions:

1. Change the USB Emulation Setting in the BIOS and or
2. Reset the Dell Dimension desktop System Setup (BIOS) to factory defaults.

Thanks.

(As I told you on IRC, there is no USB option in my BIOS. Also, the only setting I touched was changing the video memory from 2MB to 8MB, as without that the only resolution I could choose on any GNU/Linux distribution was 640x480.)

A new task against the actively developed kernel has been opened so we are closing the report against linux-source-2.6.22. Thanks!

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
