Bug Description

The system is a Dell Dimension 5150 with an nvidia 8600gt and a second sata hd added.

Steps to reproduce the bug:

1. I boot the system with the cd in
2. I choose the first option of the installer menu (run and install)
3. the orange progress bar starts going back and forth
4. the screen gets corrupted: the progress bar gets split horizontally; the animation still goes on, but with artifacts remaining both above and under the bar
5. I get two "bursts" of system beeps (they seem to be group of eight beeps, but I'm not sure) with a small delay between them
6. the installation blocks and the system starts beeping continually (not nice to hear)

Notes
1. running the installer in "safe graphics" mode gives the same results
2. installing 7.04 and then apt dist-upgrading to 7.10 works flawlessly
3. the installation CD has been checked for errors

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in ubiquity

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please try modifying the boot options by removing 'quiet splash' so we can track down where the system is crashing? If you could take a picture of the crash that would be great. Thanks in advance.

I'm no more able to reproduce the error deterministically. This is very odd. Now, each time I boot the (same) CD, I randomly get:
- screen corruption with crash
- screen corruption without crash
- beeps
- nothing (the system starts without errors)

The hardware is unchanged, except possibly for some usb peripheral. I'm pretty sure this is not due to faulty hardware (the system works ok under both linux and win xp). I tried removing 'quiet splash' but the system started correctly.

I'm puzzled. I'll try a few more time and then update the bug description.

This is another screen-related problem I just stumbled upon.

Have you verified the md5sum of the iso image that you burned or verified the media? Thanks again.

CD integrity test says: no errors. ISO md5sum is correct. All double-checked.

I'm still curious to find out what happens if you boot without the 'quiet splash' options so we can find out where the system is crashing.

I've run a few more tests.

with quiet=false splash=true I get screen corruption during "Configuring X...". This is _not_ always reproducible.

with quiet=false splash=false, the system always went live correctly.

I also randomly get beeps at system startup and system crashes when I try to restart the live system.

I also tried to boot ubuntu 8.04 alpha of 18-Dic-2007, with the same results.

Since this behaviour is considerably different from the initial bug-report I filed, I'm wondering if I should change the description entirely or close this bug-report and open a new one. Suggestions?

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Hi Wakka,

Thanks for the video, that's really helpful. Can you confirm if you boot without the 'splash' boot parameter that you no longer experience this issue? Also, you'll probably want to track bug 246269 which is regarding the uvesafb errors I saw printed to your screen in the video. Thanks.

Hi again, i've turned off and power on the computer about 10 times, i also did 10 restarts and it didnt happen absolutly anything, the boot goes ok (like it should be), and there's no beeps or freezes.

Seems like the problem is on the splash screen
