subiquity does not take in account existing partition

We should display existing partitions. I think this should be a high priority item.

This is a showstopper bug for anyone who has existing data partitions. I'm unable to install ubuntu server without destroying my data.

Confirmed; just ran in to this brick wall while trying to install on top of a bcache. This is a fundamental installer feature that is completely missing.

Seems the "workaround" is to install normal desktop ubuntu instead of ubuntu server, as that's the only installer that actually works correctly.

You can use the 18.04(.1) alternate server installer if you run into this situation. Also, I think this situation has improved in the 18.04.1 'server-live' (subiquity) installer.

I was wrong. the 18.04.1 server-live installer (as well as daily ISOs until today) have not improved upon this (tested on an UEFI booted system only). The alternative (debian-installer based) server installer works fine.

Why it's not fixed yet?

This does seem like a significant shortcoming in the current 18.04 install experience. Let's fix it in 19.04 and it will be available for 18.04 existing install media with a straightforward snap refresh.

It's on the roadmap for 19.04. I'll make sure to update this bug when there is stuff to test via snap refresh!

I see this hasn't been released (at least in 19.04.4 which I had on my test install for 19.04); moving to rls-ee-incoming so we keep tracking this feature work.

This work is currently in progress.

So the status of this is that it is landed in subiquity master and is being included in the eoan images (but not yet the bionic ones). If you are one of the people waiting for this feature, please grab yourself an ISO from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server/daily-live/pending/ and try it out (on systems with backed up data only at this stage please!).
