Bug Description

The package libglide3 is necessary to have 3D working on 3dfx Interactive, Inc's
Voodoo Banshee, Voodoo 3, Voodoo 4, and
Voodoo 5, chipsets.

I have a Voodoo 3 card and the package was not installed automatically, I think
thats a bug, its hard to trace down why 3D is not working out of the box and
discover that it is only due to that package not being installed.

I'm not sure if these cards are widespread enough to warrant putting it on the
CD, but I don't think it's large enough to matter.

this is kind of a moot point, as glide is the only driver not ported to the new
Mesa swrast API, which means that the DRI driver for it is no longer being built.

For me it seems that there is a misunderstanding - Voodoo 3 etc. are known as
tdfx - glide applies to Voodoo 2 and as far as I know there has never been a
dri-module for glide. The tdfx_dri driver seems to be under active development
(mesa-cvs, checked last yesterday), but I've had no chance yet to try it out.
DRI in general seems to be broken (Bug 21119), the Problems are the same for
tdfx, too.

I have a Voodoo3 2000 PCI card. Acceleration has always worked out of the box
with any distro that I have used. That includes previous versions of Ubuntu. I
think I have finally tracked down the problem. In Breezy, libglide2 is installed
by default. However, the description in synaptic says "Note, this is NOT the
package you want for Voodoo Banshee, Voodoo 3, Voodoo 4, or Voodoo 5."

The libglide3 package description says it is for voodoo 3 cards, however it is
not installed by default. Installing libglide3 enables dri. However, when I
start games, I recieve this error message.

gd error (glide): Can't find or access Banshee/V3 board
fx Driver: ERROR no Voodoo1/2 Graphics or Voodoo Rush !

The system drops to software rendering.

we are definetely going to demote all of glide to universe. libglide2 needs the kernel 3dfx module that doesn't even build anylonger with 2.6.15 and none of us has hw to test libglide3 with no response from the bug submitters.

I don't think it's worth to keep it in main for 3 years.

glide has been demoted to universe. as i mentioned in my previous comment libglide2 needs a kernel driver that doesn't work in dapper and it's not part of upstream kernel. libglide3 can't be tested anywhere.
