Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

Every now and then my system (gutsy, 2.6.22-14-server, SMP (2 procs), x86_64) reports a bug and freezes. It has a RAID array 4-disk setup with mdadm. The md array is exported through NFSv3.

Clues?
- In this case the bug is preceeded by ata HSM violation errors (about 15 minutes before the freeze), but I get these messages also without a freeze following.
- After the error, the system still works a little, since fetchmail and CRON messages appear in the log (maybe because of the 2 procs?)
- times between the crashes are quite long (days)
- crashes seem to happen when I'm working (i.e. I'm working on my workstation, home and data dirs mounted over NFSv3).
- no reaction to keyboard or remote login, only solution is hard reboot

Unfortunately I have only logs for this specific case, not for the previous ones. I remember them to be pretty much the same as this ones, but I can't say for sure.

Thank you for your report and helping to make ubuntu better. The Hardy Heron Alpha series was recently released. Alpha2 and subsequent releases contain an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. Note you will only be able to test Suspend from the LiveCD, not Hibernate. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks!

I've opened a new task against the actively developed kernel and am closing the report against linux-source-2.6.22. Thanks!

Apparently the crashes were caused by a bad memory module in my PC. After removing that, it seems to run fine. I think the bug can be closed.
