No sound in Ubuntu Breezy with an onboard AC97 sound card

Bug Description

I have just downloaded and installed Breezy, since I wasn't able to get my sound
running on Hoary. It isn't working on Breezy either.
I have tried the usuals: unmuted channels, chmodded /dev/dsp to 666

The sound started working for no apparent reason... I'll probably have done
something wrong. I hope I wasn't any trouble...
