Bug Description

Binary package hint: udev

Hi,

together with
inux-image-2.6.24-15-generic 2.6.24-15.26

I don't get devices for /dev/sda1,2,3 (but /dev/sda itself does exist though).

It works fine with 2.6.24-12-generic though.

Any other info you need?

Cheers,
    Stefan.

hm... interesting. I've just unplugged an IDE disc (which was /dev/hda) and now everything is back to normal. *puzzled*.

I have the same error, my /dev/sdb{1,3,5} partitions are not recognized. I have a feisty system in that disk (I boot hardy from sda1, but need sdb1 where all my music, videos, etc are stored), I found a temporary fix:

sudo hdparm -z /dev/sdb

This will force a kernel re-read of the partition table of the specified device.

This bug started to happen when /dev/hd?? files were changed to /dev/sd?? files although I use IDE hard disks.

udev version is: 117-4ubuntu2

Hi Guys,

Just curious if booting with "all_generic_ide" helps the situation?

Stefan, care to attach your dmesg output when you have the IDE drive plugged in? I'm just curious if any interesting errors messages or information is being logged. Thanks.

Leann Ogasawara, your approach works, thanks for the info.

Just add all_generic_ide to the kernel line of /boot/grub/menu.lst so it looks something like this:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-15-generic root=UUID=5bcffa71-0152-413e-8f17-80ec9e19c16b ro all_generic_ide

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Hi Leann,

this error occured with an ide hard disc plugged in, that I don't obtain any longer. Sorry, but I have no means to test if it's still present or not.

Cheers,
    Stefan.

Thanks for the update Stefan.

chuy_max, would you be able to test? If not, we'll just go ahead and close this report. Thanks.

Leann Ogasawara:

I always install the latest updates in Ubuntu 8.04, as of today, I have this versions:

UDEV:
Package: udev
Version: 117-8

KERNEL:
chuy@ubuntu:~$ uname -a
Linux ubuntu 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Aug 20 22:56:21 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

My system doesn't need all_generic_ide in menu.lst anymore, I will test Alpha5 live CD when it finishes downloading.

Intrepid Ibex Alpha5 live CD doesn't have trouble to list my "standard" partitions (ext3, NTFS) under /dev/, however, an encrypted partition, and a swap partition were not listed. I ignore if this is intended behavior so I'm attaching fdisk output and hard disk devices listed under /dev/ in a text file.

sdb2 is an encrypted partition using dm-crypt, and sda5 is a swap partition.

I have to say that in Hardy Heron as of today, lists all the partitions:
chuy@ubuntu:~$ echo /dev/sd*
/dev/sda /dev/sda1 /dev/sda2 /dev/sda5 /dev/sdb /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdb2

Hi chuy_max,

Does the Intrepid final release suffer from this issue?

Since Stefan no longer has access to the hw and chuy_max hasn't commented to the previous inquiry, I'm going to close this bug for now.

chuy_max, if this is still an issue in the latest Karmic 9.10 Alpha release http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/ please let us know and reopen this bug. To reopen the bug, click on the current status under the Status column and change the status back to "New". Thanks.
