Bug Description

brother-cups-wrapper-* and brother-lpr-drivers-* packages are in the multiverse repositories since Hardy but they still need to be installed manually and a lot of people does not even know that they exist.

I would like to suggest jockey to detect Brother printers and give the possibility to install these packages like any other restricted driver.

This would really make ubuntu easier for owners of Brother printers which have very ugly drivers from Brother.

Wouldn't it be better if the System-Config-Printer-Applet would do this? I heard that this applet will be able to download drivers so it doesn't seem to be a problem to let the applet install some packages.
The problem with Jockey is that it is AFAIK only started on startup and doesn't react on hotplugging.

An alternative could be that the printer applet calls Jockey to install this packages. This probably will even be the best solution.

Can system-config-printer install a package using apt? It would be great. However if it's not possible, I think that jockey is still a good idea because people don't use to plug/unplug their printers.

On Intrepid KDE 4 there's a systray icon saying "Printer 'DCP-120C': 'cups-missing-filter'". By clicking on it there doesn't come jockey or adept to install the Brother packages (as I expected) but only the Document Print Status window what's obviously useless.
I don't even know exactly which application this icon belongs to but as it's a python application ("killall python" kills it) I guess it's System Config Printer.

AFAIK jockey is able to download printer drivers by now, so the applet should start jockey or at least give a message which package has to be installed.

Re-assigning the package to system-config-printer. The -kde package is just the front end. The work is done by system-config-printer

Most of this has actually been implemented in Intrepid already (see related blueprints).
Only the final steps of printerdriverautodownload are needed (basically the necessary binary printer driver packages need to be hosted on the OpenPrinting web site).

As noted in Bug #258058 the system picks the wrong driver for a Brother DCP-7020 even if the newer Brother drivers from multiverse are installed. I only have that one model printer so I cannot test the behavior on other Brother models.

This bug would have been solved if the package was moved out of multiverse and installed by default. Is the brother license incompatible with the open licences Debian accept?
