Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-19-generic

After installing Kubuntu 8.04 + all available updates (obviously it's now called 8.04.1) I tried to install mythtv and figured out, that the video generated by my Hauppauge PVR-150 MCE looked strange. When reading directly from /dev/video0 the video was recognised as MPEG, but although the card was tuned to a correct frequency, the image was quite distorted (weird colors) and the syslog was spammed with the following:

Jul 7 15:14:59 grois kernel: [ 3492.419385] cx25840 2-0044: 1x2 is not a valid size!

This is just the start of the error messages, the last lines were repeated over and over until one stopped the playback.

For me replacing the firmware-files (v4l-cx24850.fw and v4l-cx2341x-enc.fw) in /lib/firmware/2.6.24-19 with older verions (sorry, I don't know what version they are - I think I extracted them from the windows-driver but I'm not sure) solved the problem (of course after reboot).

I attached the working firmware to this post. As I said, I don't know where I got this files from, so install them on your own risk, you have been warned.

Hi Andreas,

Development for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release is currently under way. If you get a chance could you confirm this is still an issue with the latest Alpha for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10. More information regarding the latest Alpha can be found at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing. Please let us know your results.

Additionally, beginning with the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 development cycle the linux-ubuntu-modules package was actually merged with the linux kernel package. Going forward, bugs that would have been reported against linux-ubuntu-modules should now just be reported against linux. I'll go ahead and add the 'linux' task for this report. However, against linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24 this will be closed as it does not qualify for a Stable Release Update - http://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates . Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
