Volume keys do not work in KDE on nw8240

hotkey-setup can't touch the X keymaps, and changing every X keymap is a painful
and invasive procedure. In Ubuntu (and Kubuntu) we can basically guarantee that
volume keys are on a certain keycode - it would be handy if KDE could handle
this on its own.

Is this what should be done to make it work out of the box?

I have played a bit with different keyboard models (System Settings -> Regional & Accessibility -> Keyboard Layout) and setting keyboard model to "Hewlett-Packard Omnibook XE3 GC" makes the three volume keys to act as expected (kmilo is activated).

Question 1: can we detect keyboard layout during install and set it appropriately?

Question 2: how could add new Keyboard layout to KDE (or X.org) in order to support newer HP notebooks (all keys)?

I have submitted bug to freedesktop.org as it looks like they are responsible for adding new keyboard models to X.

BTW, you can also use "Laptop/notebook Compaq (eg. Armada) Laptop Keyboard" model as workaround for volume keys (but does not help with others).

Kde takes as default whatever the xserver is configured
to use as default, during installation (or manual updates)

In case a pc10X + default_(k)ubuntu_keys can be
done by the installer I would suggest to add one
additional xkb layout, e.g.,

Kubuntu Notebook defaults

Then KDE could enabel xbk extention + 'kubuntu notebook layout' by default, and the ubuntu standard keycodes would be
active. Mhmm, in case user didn't change xkb extention
in kde control center, the the new system default would
even be picked up after an upgrade.

This machine is a Compaq that has been rebranded as an HP after the merger.

This is not a duplicate of bug 20282, but KDE specific issue regarding handling Ubuntu key mapping by default (as GNOME does).
