Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

NetworkManager crashes when I remove my mobile GSM USB stick.
When clicking the diconnect option nothing happens, so that's why I removed it this awkward way.
So maybe the bug is that under GSM disconnect option in the network manager doesn't work.

If you need more info pls ask me.

Happens regularly, also while using my Huawei mobile internet USB stick in the train, while travelling through an area with bad reception.
A restart is the only thing that helps then.

I Have installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my PC and Laptop and have the same problem.
To connect to the internet I use as modem the "Motorola W3m" cellphone.
Ubuntu recognizes it and works fine with it.
But I have the occasional problem with the sustainability of the NetworkManager
I get a message that he is not running. I looked through the file /var/log/messages and found the following message
erick@ubuntu:~$ dmesg | grep NetworkManager

My ubuntu version is:

erick@ubuntu:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 9.04
Release: 9.04
erick@ubuntu:~$

I installed the latest updates, but the problem is constantly repeated.
Reading in the web http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1184623

I guess the problem is something with the EVDO mode... but my cellphone
do not have the option to switch to "EVDO only mode"... I have noticed
too that when I am in the city where i study this problem is less
constantly, but when i am in the city where i live the problem is very
constantly. The first city is smaller than the second and it makes me
think that the problem is really related with the signal mode (maybe the
evdo mode is more stable in the places where less people are connected).

This is a very very very regular problem, it already happen to me 5
times today... and 2 weeks ago it happen to me 7 times in only one
night. I cannot leave my pc downloading large files as a DVD .iso files,
a simple Ubuntu weekly update or YouTube video (for example) because in
some moment of the process i know that this problem will interrupt my
connection. I have to be over my computer all the time to launch a "gksu
NetworkManager" command when the problem appear to be sure that the
download it's OK. But some times the download cannot be resumed. :(

It's very frustrating.

first occurrence in quite a few up/down cycles. broadband cellcard connection seemed dead after lengthy idle (had not exited according to syslog), so clicked connection in nm menu; got "disconnected" popup message; clicked same menu item to reconnect, got crash notification.

apparently nm restarted itself and followed thru with reconnecting (does not usually autoconnect when I plug usb modem), because bug reporting etc. went fine without further intervention

I'm running Lucid beta1, but even with Karmic it frequently would disconnect without the Network Manager icon showing it disconnected. I simply reconnect when this happens, but it is rather annoying. It seemed with Jaunty (same Mobile Wireless internet connection as I have now) I didn't have this problem, and it rarely disconnected *period*.
