Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

Opening or saving to network share is not possible in Firefox. Could someone please explain to me why opening/saving is not the same in every application in Gnome? See also the bug I filled for Gringotts. Because this is not the first time I have seen applications without network shares being visible in the save/open dialog screen. Isn't it like calling an object like save file and thus being the same everywhere? Or is this a too simple view of how stuff works inside Gnome?

Pleace note, his is a serious problem for people working within a network, you have to download anything to your local system and then upload it to the desired location in nautilus - thanks nautilus has tab support, which eases the pain, but it still very frustrating.

I am looking for a master bug for this issue, meanwhile I'll post my workaround for it here.

Can you browse to the .gvfs directory in your home directory and see if your network shares are there ?

Here (Ubuntu Jaunty) the workaround works, but sadly that's quite inconvenient for non-techie users.

I can confirm this bug,
A very very similar bug is
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+2.0/+bug/304345

The problem seems related to the file dialog lybrary (gtk2??).
You can experiment the same situation in Gimp, Openoffice . gedit...

the file dialog cannot access the network. Your resource panel does not provide an hook to netework.

Please, consider that in a weblcient world, this is a big issue.

Could you raise the level of importance of the bug ?

This was the same in Evolution few month ago, i was unable to insert an image from a smb share (i've lost the bug id :( ). And it's fixed now. A fix for firefox won't be too difficult
