upgrading to the 3d accelerated drivers following the first bunch of instructions @ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI fixes the problem (also changes drivers, so technically not a fix)

I'm getting this too (Radeon R100 QD [Radeon 7200]), and so are several others - see this thread in the forums: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=143839

Same happens to me on both "ati"-driver, and "radeon"-driver. (Graphics card is ATI IGP 340M)

This bug happens only in Dapper for me, not in Breezy

This happens for me as well, ATI 9200m. The problem goes away when using the fglrx drivers.

This has been around for a while now in Dapper and really needs to be fixed. The problem isn't there in Breezy for me, though it was for a while before Breezy was released.

I have a ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500] and I use the opensource radeon driver. And I see this too. When I use the glslideshow screensaver hack the screen flickers with big black lines all over the screen this is with gnome-screensaver. When I use xscreensaver with the same glslideshow hack and the same .xscreensaver config I don't get them. This only apears for me when I use gnome-screensaver.

This happens to me, I am using Radeon 7000 VE, which is RV100 QY. My opinion is that OpenGL driver part of ATI 'ati' open source Xorg driver causes this glich, or simply these chipsets supports opengl poorly (which is quite possible).

Anyway, this bug stands between user and using Xgl for some nice wisles and bells on desktop :)

we dont support Xgl and imho it will still take several releases until one can even think about it.

As this was just a duplicate of bug #22045 which is fixed now I'll close this.

I think this bug has to be reopened since it happens with Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon (just updated) with open-source radeon driver and EXA enabled. With XAA there's no flickering.
