Bug Description

I encountered this bug using an Asus F8Sv-A1 laptop. This bug likely affects other Asus laptop models as well.

Pressing Fn+F8 on this computer should tell the system to switch between displays (external and internal). At the moment, Linux gets the ACPI event but does not translate it any further than that.

I followed the steps here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting

Diagnosis from the bottom...

dmccall@dylan-laptop:~$ acpi_listen
hotkey ATKD 00000061 00000004 #pressing fn+f8

dmccall@dylan-laptop:~$ sudo input-events 4
/dev/input/event4
   bustype : BUS_I8042
   vendor : 0x1
   product : 0x1
   version : 43841
   name : "AT Translated Set 2 keyboard"
   phys : "isa0060/serio0/input0"
   bits ev : EV_SYN EV_KEY EV_MSC EV_LED EV_REP
waiting for events
#... pressing fn+f8 numerous times confirms that the event does not reach here

Bits and pieces:

dmccall@dylan-laptop:~$ lshal |grep system.hardware
  system.hardware.primary_video.product = 1031 (0x407) (int)
  system.hardware.primary_video.vendor = 4318 (0x10de) (int)
  system.hardware.product = 'F8SV' (string)
  system.hardware.serial = 'NF1S7A79370117' (string)
  system.hardware.uuid = 'BE3E81DC-894A-7226-C180-001D60EF8DD6' (string)
  system.hardware.vendor = 'ASUSTeK Computer Inc.' (string)
  system.hardware.version = '1.0' (string)

dmccall@dylan-laptop:~$ uname -a
Linux dylan-laptop 2.6.28-11-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Mon Mar 23 16:40:00 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

dmccall@dylan-laptop:~$ cat /proc/version_signature

I noticed that my display change hotkeys worked properly in Fedora 10 (booting from a USB flash drive).
I did not get the opportunity to redo the commands here, since I brutalized the installation at around the same time. Will do, hopefully...

Can somebody affected by this bug please report it upstream to http://bugzilla.kernel.org/

I don't think Ubuntu can fix this bug as fast as upstream can. Please test the steps lined out in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting against a lucid live CD. Let me know if you need help.

Hi Dylan,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 349289

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
