I am seeing this with some Ogg files (which are fine in other players). One example is any "Going Linux" Oggcast file.
Example: http://www.archive.org/download/glp100/glp100.ogg

This is a dump of what I get when I try to play said files.

I know it says that the "Extradata" is corrupt, but these files play fine in any other player. It's just "mplayer" that does not work. I am using "MPlayer SVN-r1.0~rc3+svn20090426-4.4.3" on Ubuntu 10.04.

I have been informed by "Randy White" that the embedded image is the culprit. he found the information on a Russian site. http://www.gentoo.ru/node/17774
(Afraid I don't speak Russian)

I did as he suggested an used Easytag to remove the embedded pictures. Bingo, the ogg file now plays. This isn't a great work around as it would need done for every podcast that gets downloaded that contains pictures.

So the problem would seem to be mplayer not supporting the picture tag properly. Hope this helps someone create a fix.

Just found something else, if I change the image to a different PNG (or JPG or whatever created by the GIMP) the Ogg file plays fine. So it must be something to do with the picture that is embedded in some Ogg files.
I have created two picture files (attached). When embedded, one works and the other does not. I am not sure if it is related to the compression, file size or what.
I hope this gives you more to go on.
