Bug Description

On my Dell Vostro 1500 running Kubuntu Jaunty x64, I have noticed that sometimes if I accidentally press two adjacent keys on the keyboard at the same time, one of the keys will begin rapidly repeating until I press another key. The problem only happens if the keys are right next to each other. No output is produced in the system or xorg logs when this occurs.

It also happens with the 2.6.29 kernel from the Ubuntu Kernel Team PPA.

Hi Michael,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 349854

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I am updating the status to "new" as I am experiencing this bug on a Dell Latitude D630 system. When I press two keys at the same time and depress them, one of the keys will continue as if I'm holding it down. For example, if I tap the "m" and "n" keys at the same time, I will get this:
"mnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnna"

Notice that I pressed "a" at the end. This is because the "n" character will repeat indefinitely until another keypress is detected.

Please let me know what else I can attach/contribute to get this bug fixed.

Also on Kubuntu 10.10. This bug has existed in all previous revisions of [k]Ubuntu I've used (back to 8.04).

I don't think this is a linux bug anymore. The same thing happens with Windoze 7.

Hmm, I've never noticed it happening in Windows. I'll be able to test it out in WinXP tomorrow. It may be a hardware error.

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. From a terminal window please run:

apport-collect 349854

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.
