Thanks for your report, unfortunately it doesn't contain informations that developers need to work on it.
If you can reproduce the crash can you the following:
1) Make sure that your system is up to date (by running System->Administration->Update Manager and checking for updates)
2)in terminal type:
sudo force_start=1 /etc/init.d/apport restart
3) Now work with evolution until it crashes again, it should trigger a window which asks if you want to report a problem. Choose "Report Problem" and send a full report to Launchpad, then proceed as usually.
4) Mark this bug as a duplicate of a new bug.

why is the status changed to invalid?
i have the same in my logs on ubuntu 9.04 64bit:
May 28 13:50:11 XXXXX kernel: [ 4062.810791] evolution[23173]: segfault at 0 ip 00007fd19de5cfce sp 00007fd1831e3d48 error 4 in libc-2.9.so[7fd19ddd9000+168000]

also i get the message "error while generating message list" in the status line on the bottom of the application window and on clicking the message i get in a dialogbox: "database image is malformed".

i did not have this problem until 22.may (i did not read emails for some days)

@Krzysztof Klimonda:
your suggestion above, about bug reporting, does nothing, evolution crashes silently.

after reading/deleting some messages by hand (webmail) evolution stopped crashing but does not generate a message list for some of the imap folders

What does Invalid mean?

Evolution crashed several times and logged it in var/log/messages. Any
segfault is a bug.

You are absolutely right. Unfortunately bug report without needed data
(Coredump file or generated stacktrace) isn't helpful for developers.

@runout: Can you send me for my email (so we don't spam bug report) result of
$ cat /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern
It should be:
"|/usr/share/apport/apport %p %s %c"
if apport is enabled

Best Regards,
Krzysztof Klimonda

Looks like these crashes wiped out a large portion of my mail folders.

I found many of the files in ~/evolution/mail/local are empty on disk.

Fortunately, I had not expunged for a while and was able to recover many emails.

Backup is your friend.

evolution does not crash anymore.
maybe because i moved/deleted some mails per webmail (squirrelmail)
i still have the issue with the "database disk image is malformed"

maybe the problem is related to a special email in the box, because i have that only on two of the imap folders. actually the INBOX and one of the subfolders. all other folders are displayed well.

This Bug, 381144 appears to be solved by the solution to
381504 and 359658.

<email address hidden> supplied a fix:

Thank you for opening this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug
looks similar to bug 359658; Ted has prepared a proposed fix for Jaunty,
available at his PPA: https://edge.launchpad.net/~ted/+archive/bugfix.

I would like you to update your evolution-indicator to Ted's PPA
version, and check. If your issue is resolved, I intend to mark this bug
as a dup.

How do we get this fix applied and the bug resolved?

@tomdean: the fix on bug 359658 has been released on Karmic, and Ted is working on getting it to Jaunty. He already prepared a test version (in his PPA, pointed to on my comment above). Right now you will have to install the PPA version, and provide Ted with feedback on bug 359658.

The reason this bug has been closed invalid is given on the second comment: it does not contain any hard data we can use to determine the issue. This comment also states what would be needed to to.

@runout: the issue with malformed database seems to be unrelated.

I am marking this bug as a duplicate of bug 359658. Please add any new comments there.

Bug 359658 doesn't solve this issue.

A month ago Evolution suddenly didn't want to start anymore. Nothing displayed. dmesg shows evolution[8484]: segfault at 0 ip 00007f6a831a5092 sp 00007fff97d1bf98 error 4 in libc-2.9.so[7f6a83121000+168000].

This is still true after the fix for that bug is applied.

I had tried reinstalling libc and evolution. Without success. evolution still segfaults. I haven't had local access to my e-mails for over one month now. Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04.

Please reinvestigate.
