Bug Description

Binary package hint: vlc

ubuntu 8.10
vlc 0.9.4-1ubuntu3.1

flac file created by/exported from audacity 1.3.5-2 (using libflac8 1.2.1-1.2 (according to http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/audacity) stops in middle of playback. vlc does not freeze, and playback can be restarted, but stops again in the same place. can seek to just after this spot in the flac file and vlc will continue playing the rest of the flac file. flac file is 96 kHz, 24 bits, stereo (recorded from record player). in vlc messages (Tools > Messages), verbosity has been set to 2. see attachment for output.

when tested again using vlc 1.0.1-1ubuntu1 on ubuntu 9.04 and the same 96 kHz 24-bit flac file, this is no longer happening. although i still get a number of:
[0xa059cb8] main audio output debug: audio output is starving (11766), playing silence
[0xa059cb8] alsa audio output debug: recovered from buffer underrun

which is causing 'skipping'.

however, a different 96 kHz 24-bit flac file is still stopping in the middle of playback with vlc 1.0.1-1ubuntu1. this file was created in the same way as the first file, i.e. exported from audacity 1.3.5-2 running on ubuntu 8.10. it stops at the same point every time, at about 6:12 (out of 11:04 total). i set verbosity to 2 and have attached the output.

the file stopped playing and the message at line 213 was displayed. several seconds passed and then the rest of the messages showed up, then i closed vlc.

This bug might have a wider scope. I noticed the problem in VLC, so I tried rhythmbox, and minirok, and they all abort on the same FLAC files at the same points in time.

I did NOT have this problem in karmic, so it's not a problem with the FLAC files as such.

Anyhoo - if the original bug is VLC-only, the question remains, what's the fix for LTS?

Ubuntu 10.04, VLC 1.0.6 from the repos, same or related problem. FLAC playback stops in the middle of a certain track, same thing every time, two minutes into the song.
Playback quality with VLC has generally degraded since 9.10 with stuttering occuring now and then which never used to happen before.
