Bug Description

Setting font rending to be "Monochrome" in the control panel results in missing words from menus and various areas of the GUI.

Various different font selections/xorg settings make no difference.

The missing words appear after a mouse over, and the fonts appear normally if antialiasing is selected.

(hopefully) relevent section of xorg.conf:

Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies, Inc. Radeon R250 Lf [Radeon Mobility 9000 M9]"
 Driver "radeon"
 BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Cheers,
Andy.

After more investigation, the problem is related to using XAA in xorg. If I switch to EXA this problem disappears, but unfortunatley I then get brightly coloured squares on my buttons and so on.

Something is up with the radeon driver!

Found a fix!!!

    Option "XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps"

Any chance somebody could possibly have a look into this for me?

Would be much appreciated :(

What if you use the ati driver instead of the radeon one?

This is really a corner case that i am not sure i can fix without introducing other regressions.

Thanks for your reply, Fabio!

Using the "ati" driver, I get the same results (looking at the logs, it appears to load the radeon driver anyway?)

PS. Accidentally clicked a 'report-here' button at the top of the page! Sorry for that. :-S

I can confirm this bug also. It also appears in other distros, such as Fedora Core 6 Test 1. It does not show up in Fedora Core 5, however. So, that version change must have introduced this bug.

Thanks Roland,

It's a shame that bugs like this are rejected. I prefer monochrome font rendering, and it used to work with no issues.

As I posted above, the XaaNoOffScreenPixmaps option in xorg.conf is a work around, but IMHO this is a valid bug - something useful which used to work out of the box, is now broken.

Regards, Andy.

I installed the fglrx driver from the Ubuntu respository. It does not have this problem. Also, I can load the glx module without the screen going black (as is the case with the ati driver).

I wonder what corner case means because it is easily reproducable. Just turn on monochrome font rendering. It happens on other distros (as mentioned already) as well.

Hornett83: ok, do you still run dapper, and if so, can you try a gutsy live-cd if the problem is still there?

Thank you Timo, I wasn't expecting a reply! :)
