Bug Description

The only thing I know for certain is that after all the updates were applied via 'apt-get dist-upgrade' the system-wide fonts were extremely tiny. The first installation off the media yielded at least readable fonts, unlike after the 21APR06 updates which included many KDE-specific ones.

The first update contained 57 pkgs, by the time I had recovered a backup and made the 2nd attempt the list was 80. Both times the fonts' sizes system-wide went from readable to a 9-pt unreadable. Firefox would not change no matter what I did. It's fonts were set to 16-pt (prefs)... but were 8-pt at best.

I am very certain that this is KDE-specific because I have been applying daily updates, as available, without this font problem. I have the update history going back to 09APR06, if it'll help. Let me know.

I have the original update list, only:

  acpi-support app-install-data bsdutils cpp-4.0 cupsys cupsys-bsd
  cupsys-client evms evms-ncurses fontconfig g++-4.0 gcc-4.0 gcc-4.0-base hal

Do you have any_idea_at_all which pkg in particular might be causing this
prob?

Hm. That is a puzzle. Thanks for the reply. :-)

Having nothing better to do... I decided to go down the update list from the other day, item by item, to see what b0rked the fonts. It was "KDE-GUIDANCE" that ultimately led to the tiny fonts.

After each item was installed I CTRL-ALT-BKSPd KDE to start X, as well. The updates I performed, in order:

Thanks. :-) I hope that helps the developers squash that ugly bug in a
hurry ...like they did the celesita bug (in one day, that is). ;-)

I can confirm this, happend for me in Gnome, too. (I don't have KDE installed, only some KDE applications like Kaffeine...)

For me, installing msttcorefonts helped, so maybe a former integration of these fonts got lost?

Ok, I think I got it. displayconfig-restore fails because of a missing import. Add "import syslog" and restart X -> Fonts are nice again.

The small fonts are due to a wrong DPI-Value in X. Xorg can't read the display size on my laptop and sets DPI to 75, but it should be 96. That's also the reason why not everyone encountered this problem, most displays return a proper DPI-Value.

As for the people using Gnome: I don't think this bug is affecting you. There are some similar bugs for fontconfig or firefox opened, please have a look at them.

Good! ...But where does one add the import statement? Does it go in a
script, or just on the CLI --and if on the CLI, what is to prevent the fonts
getting b0rked, again? (I haven't programmed in 25 years, I think. :-\ )

Never mind... 2nd try and I had it. Go finger. That statement isn't in the
1st file, so wouldn't have known. There are a couple other imports missing
later in the file... they made no difference. Thanks for the fix. :-)

My apologies, that's a lame bug. Until the next release is out you can just open up the displayconfig-restore.py file and look for the line containing syslog and remove it or comment it out.

Perhaps... but the developer took it seriously enough to hunt down the
cause ..and it was the *absence* of the import statement. Not
everyone --meaning, obviously, "myself"-- is so script-savvy as yourself,
unfortunately. Some of us need more help than others. It's that tolerance
that has made this community what it is. I had my belly-full of forums that
snort at those who don't know as much as they do ...and state it publicly on
the forums. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE YOU. Thank you that. :-)
