Bug Description

No panel icons for any user (even new ones). Upgraded from breezy to dapper and all was well, but a recent dist-upgrade broke it. Additionally using the gnome-theme-manager will give this error and exit:

"The default theme schemas could not be found on your system. This means that you probably don't have metacity installed, or that your gconf is configured incorrectly."

Metacity is definetly installed.

What theme do you use? Does changing the theme fixes the issue?

I tried changing the icon theme to gnome from gconf, yes. It resolved nothing.

Does "sudo apt-get -f install" does something useful? Maybe the upgrade didn't happen correctly?

I am experiencing the same symptoms after an update 1 week ago today. I am using all the default themes.

I too have this after installing dapper updates yesterday. No default schema in configuration editor either. Password is now also rejected in synaptic. I am at a loss to what has happened. Please help!

In another bug report I read about people using Automatix. Did anybody of you use that tool?

I have used Automatix, but not to fix this problem. I fixed this by
uninstalling and reinstalling several gnome components. Unfortunately, I
don't remember which ones. I believe it may have been the
gnome-control-center which uninstalled many other things with it.

automatix has probably broken your installation, don't use non-official, non-supported software. Closing the bug since we support Ubuntu usage but if you run some tools like that you take your responsabilities for it
