Bug Description

Since today's update (26 of April, around 10:20 UTC), the menu and dialog fonts in Firefox got huge. Fonts in other GTK apps are like before.
In System Settings/Appearance/GTK Style and fonts I have:
Use another style: Raleigh
Use another font: Sans Serif (size 8)

Trying to upload screenshot...

In this screen shot you can see Firefox's menu, a KDE application and another GTK app.

You said the font gtk apps were using, but not kde ones. You should choose to use the same font in gtk style and fonts to have konqueror and synaptic look the same.
Concerning firefox, it has its own dpi settings, so you will need to check that.

No, it is no longer the case anymore... if I remember that was fixed
by a subsequent update.

I would like to know what exactly happened, but well it doesn't matter.

This bug should still be closed since it has been fixed a while ago.

Oh, right, just had a look at this changelog :
http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/k/kdebase/kdebase_3.5.2-0ubuntu27/changelog

kubuntu_52_gtk_qt_engine_config.diff was altered first at Mon, 24 Apr 2006 21:16:19 +0200, which probably introduced this bug, and then at Mon, 1 May 2006 15:02:46 +0100 which probably fixed it.

The first statement is more likely than the second. I didnt see when sohail reported this.

Its kind of funny. In a bad way. Because the fonts are huge again :(

What do you mean, I think you said it was also fixed for you.

When something is wrong, like I told you, look at the gtk settings in the control center to check both qt and gtk should use the same font, then check the ~/.gtkrc* files it should write, then check the firefox settings, in Edit->Preferences->Fonts->Advanced then dpi or something.
Or type about:config in the url bar, and search for browser.display.screen_resolution.

And use "xrdb -q | grep Xft.dpi" to see the dpi used for kde (or any other xft apps).
If this setting is not set, the dpi used is the one returned by "xdpyinfo|grep res"

Hello,

I installed Xubuntu Edgy and I can confirm this error there. Please refer to firefox_big_fonts.png.

Also please note that I have no .gtkrc files in my home directory, yet all applications (including Thunderbird) display fonts correctly.

Firefox only displays the text on the web pages correctly, but it is governed by the font settings in the Content menu. However, all the other parts of the UI have these ugly big fonts.

It can be made to look better by hacking the userChrome.css, as described here: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=168504 and here: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=176039

BUT some controls are left out, and I do not know their names. Among these are text fields (single line) and buttons. Please refer firefox_big_fonts2.png, and compare it with the first shot.

I think this error should be of higher importance, as it definitely impacts user experience!

You didn't answer any of my question about dpi settings (comments 11).
Note that browser.display.screen_resolution has been changed to layout.css.dpi in firefox 2.0 which is in edgy.

Ok, here they are (but those questions were not aimed at me :)):

browser.display.screen_resolution: does not exist
No dpi in Edit->Preferences->Fonts->Advanced either. But as I mentioned earlier: text fonts are OK, the problem is with everything else! :)
Anyway, I experimented with the screen_resolution setting earlier, but I saw no change when I set it to 75, 96 or 108 -- everything looked exactly the same.

xrdb -q:
Xcursor.size: 24
Xcursor.theme: Human
Xcursor.theme_core: true
Xft.antialias: 1
Xft.hinting: 1
Xft.hintstyle: hintfull
Xft.rgba: rgb

xdpyinfo|grep res:
  resolution: 75x75 dots per inch
    ButtonPressMask ButtonReleaseMask LeaveWindowMask

How did you play with screen_resolution if it doesn't exist?
As I said in my previous comment:
"Note that browser.display.screen_resolution has been changed to
layout.css.dpi in firefox 2.0 which is in edgy."
The default value should be -1
Try changing it to 0

Thanks for reminding me, I overlooked that bit. I changed it, and now it works. Finally, the usual look :)

Is there a reason why it is set to -1 by default? There is no problem with it under gnome, but it seems like other DEs (if any) are affected.

As for screen_resolution: when I saw that it did not do anything I set it to 0, which made it disappear from the list on the next restart.

Thanks again!
