Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

Fresh install of karmic from todays live iso.

On gdm logon screen I can choose layouts from the list, and doing so adds them to a quicklist. However doing so results in a messed up panel if any of the layout names are quite long (which some are). Screenshot to follow. Note I'm running at a fairly conservative 1024x768 and it's nudged stuff horizontally off the panel.

I think this bug's importance should be raised as it affects any and all netbooks which typically have 1024x600 or similar resolutions in their displays.

costales (costales) wrote : Re: Long keyboard layout names mess the panel layout up

This bug exist for the Asturian variant (ast_ES code).
The width of phrase "Spain (Asturian variant with bottom-dot H and bottom-dot L)" in the GDM for choose the variant keyboard is very large, exceeding the width of screen.

Could be shortened to "Spain (Asturian)"?
I just tried in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic alpha 6.
Thanks very much!

I described a similar usability problem and proposed having a bubble/on-hover message displayed to wrok around it a while ago, see Bug #43185. Perhaps that may help.

gdm decides to use an 800 x 600 resolution for some systems (including mine), so we should make sure that the layout works for those small resolution as well.

My problem of having too many/too large widgets on the login screen, rendering the controls at the bottom of the screen hardly usable (bug #447112), is still present in Lucid final.
