Bug Description
Ubuntu systems have a "fixed" screen binary that supports 256 changes of color on the hardstatus line.
However, a lot of older systems do not, and will not.
We should support some sort of a legacy mode, where we change colors as little as possible on the hardstatus line.

Along these lines, it might be nice to remove all of the \005{= wK} style color changes, setting them in a file to be sourced:
wK="\005{= wK"
and then using $wK wherever.
