Not actually. The new upstream version is required. Documentation pending (diffstat, debdiff for -2ubuntu1, buildlog).

This massive diffstat was generated by running the following command: `debdiff crystalspace_0.98-20040623-2.1ubuntu2.dsc crystalspace_0.99-20060125-2ubuntu1.dsc | diffstat > diffstat`. Note that this includes a transition from a native package to a non-native pacakge, and so is incredibly intrusive.

The attached debdiff, when applied to Debian version 0.99-20060125-2, will collapse the required Ubuntu changes (debian/control only). Note that all previous Ubuntu changes are no longer meaningful with the new upstream.

This is the buildlog for the new upstream version. As opposed to those listed on https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+builds?build_state=failed&build_text=crystalspace, it actually built.

The existing package in Ubuntu FTBFS. This was fixed in debian with an upstream version, so no parallel patch exists. The dependencies for the existing package have not undergone the GL transition, let alone anything more recent (no sourceful Ubuntu changes in >1 year).

similar to sear: the debian changelog promises to have all changes we need, plus fixes for compilation and for amd64. Since there are no reverse depends, I think we should make the big exception here.
