mplayer does not play divx files

Bug Description

Forgive the basic Ubuntu user...

Upon fresh install of Dapper RC1 I opened mplayer and tried to play my divx movies.

None of the movies would display in the window or in full-screen mode. The player timeline would progress, and the video window displays a visualization instead.

did you install the win32 codecs, and gstreamer 0.10...

by enabling multiverse and universe...

win32 can be found using ubuntu plf http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/doc/plf
(these are for breezy but they work in dapper too)

I'm on dapper amd64, so I don't have win32codecs. I've tested with DivX3, DivX5, and Xvid files, and all play back fine.

Could you paste the terminal output from gmplayer (open a terminal and type "gmplayer path/to/my/movie.avi") and the output from "file path/to/my/movie.avi"

It will look somwhat like this

jamie@doomguy:~/media/movies$ file "Hitler, Rise of Evil (TVrip Part 1) -- [imdb tt0346293 | Biography,Drama | English].avi"
Hitler, Rise of Evil (TVrip Part 1) -- [imdb tt0346293 | Biography,Drama | English].avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 352 x 288, ~25 fps, video: DivX 5, audio: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (stereo, 44100 Hz)

and gmplayer output is

jamie@doomguy:~/media/movies$ gmplayer "Hitler, Rise of Evil (TVrip Part 1) -- [imdb tt0346293 | Biography,Drama | English].avi"

This sounds more like you're using totem, the default media player for Ubuntu. In that case just enable the universe/multiverse repositories and install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg and gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly

Firstly, it seems to be totem, not mplayer. Secondly, the reporter hasn't responded in 9 months. Thirdly, the codec packages probably weren't installed. Rejecting.
