Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

Pasting an url over a firefox window should result firefox loading that url, but middlemouse.contentLoadURL is not true by default. IMHO it should be. Couldn't find a bug where it was decided to be disabled, so I think this is a bug.

16:55 < iwj> tepsipakki: This has been discussed in ubuntu-devel. I don't like the current behaviour either but consensus seems to be against us.

16:56 < Kamion> tepsipakki: while personally I'm with you and iwj, the reason given originally was that if you're trying to middle-click on a URL to open it in a new window/tab and you miss, whatever random stuff happens to be in your X
selection gets loaded by firefox

I agree with the submitter of this bug, and can confirm this with Kubuntu Dapper. It is a very practical default behaviour to enable "paste-to-load".

The "whatever random stuff" that happens to be in your X selection can just as well be a deliberate seekword, since the default behaviour with a seekword as "pseudo-URL" causes firefox do a Google "I feel lucky" -search on that seekword.

I have had it a couple times load a page unintended, but it wasn't a problem for me to press "back" at that point. The lack of this feature is a more serious drawback IMO, and had caused me to start moving towards using other browsers already in the short time I've used Dapper.

I'd also like to thank the submitter of this bug, since the title gave me a sufficient hint to enabling this for myself. ;-)

this is intentionally disabled ... rejecting. Don't think that we will find a solution that makes 'all happy'

Alright, thank you for the information.

FWIW, I'd like to say that now that I have this feature enabled again, I regularly take advantage of it and deliberately paste URLs and sometimes also seekwords directly into the main window.
