Bug Description

Please update wacom related packages to (at least) latest stable version of linuxwacom (0.7.0). Current one for Breezy is simply useless, because swithing between wacom devices in GIMP is impossible and it doesn't look like GIMP's bug:

My xorg.conf is listed there

The current dapper one is STILL 0.6.4, which doesn't work with my Graphire 4, which sucks.

PLEASE update the driver to 0.7.x, which adheres to the new Xorg paths as well..

It would be really nice if somebody could update the wacom driver. The current one in dapper is over one year old and new tablets simply don't work. Recently I bought a graphire 4 tablet and I hope it will be usable when dapper ships :-)

Ok i just uploaded the new wacom-tools 0.7.2 that will also ship the Xorg driver. It will take a few hours to propagate in the archive and i am waiting for Flight6 to be released before i can change X dependendency to have it automatically installed. In the meanwhile you can test it.
The init script should be able to create the /dev/wacom symlink. If not please file a bug but it is a possible issue we are aware of.

Please consider updating the Dapper Wacom driver to version 0.7.3 beta. This is the first version that allows un- and replugging a tablet while X is running, which will be of huge benefit for those using a tablet with a laptop or needing to move a tablet from one desktop to another. In all driver versions up to and including 0.7.2 (currently in Dapper), (1) a tablet needs to be plugged in during X startup to be recognised, and (2) the computer will freeze hard when a tablet is unplugged. Not so dapper...

Also, according to the Linuxwacom website, version 0.7.3 beta "supports kernel 2.6.15", which is the kernel version used in Dapper.

I agree with Stefan's post. I am running version 0.7.3 for 2 weeks now and even if it is labeled a "beta", this driver is rock solid and gets rid of some very nasty bugs.

I disagree. Crashing the computer when a tablet is unplugged is certainly a bug, and a severe one at that. And users will certainly expect their tablets to just work when plugged in rather than having to restart X for that. The only thing I was not sure about is whether I should have filed this as a new bug against the package. Please let me know what you think. I will then either change the severity on this bug back to severe, or file a new one.

Okay. I will test current behaviour with the Dapper Flight 6 Live CD tonight so I can give all the right details, then I will file the new bug. Thanks for your responsiveness! (I have to use a tablet with a laptop every day – currently running Breezy – and can’t tell you how tired I am of having to restart X all the time and doing the rmmod/modprobe voodoo.)

New version pushed through for dapper this week (Version 7.2) seems to make this bug obsolete (eg Graphire4 support etc). There are some bugs with the package that ill highlight in other issues tomorrow. Please reopen if desired.

As requested by Matthew Garret, I opened a new bug for the remaining major issues (no hotplugging support, no support for kernel 2.6.15, potentially still freezing the computer on unplugging), which should be fixable by updating the package to upstream version 0.7.3 beta. The new bug number is 38336. I have initally set the severity of the new bug to Major since it involves no less than three issues, each severe in itself. I also reset the severity of the present bug (#4773) to Major (because it was), but assume we can now consider it closed (Fix released) and focus on the new bug instead.
