Bug Description

I installed Ubuntu 6.06 Server CD in a virtual machine in VMWare (WinXP Pro as the host OS) on my laptop using the LAMP install option. I followed through the installation procedure, using LVM with default partition settings with ext3. However, when the installation finished and attempted to reboot, the virtual machine hangs right after the line "Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel." I repeated the installation with regular linux-partitions and again the virtual machine hangs at boot time.

Other than the usual timezone, machine name settings, I did not change any other settings during the text-mode installation procedure. I have Ubuntu 5.10 installed on another virtual machine session and it runs fine with it.

The machine settings are 3.8GB disk space and 256MB RAM, NAT network, default SCSI and IDE virtual hard disk/CD-ROM respectively. For the type of OS, I used "Other Linux 2.6.x kernel".

I repeated the process with both regular Ubuntu and Xubuntu alternative CDs - both installations boot up properly after installation.

There is definitely something wrong with Ubuntu 6.06 Server CD working within Windows VMWare.

I'm experiencing the exact same problem. My frustrations are documented in these Ubuntu threads:

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=198879
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=34957

There I have listed the hardware I am using and version of VMware workstation. I agree that there is something wrong with Ubuntu 6.06 Server CD and Windows VMWare. I still have not been able to resolve this problem. Have you had any luck? Feel free to contact me via email.

Ubuntu 6.06 Desktop LTS host os on toshiba L20-268 notebook with Ubuntu 6.06 Desktop LTS and Xubuntu 6.06 Desktop LTS guests build, reboot and run fine !

have you tried the desktop edition instead ?
have you tried xubuntu ?
have you tried vmware server (but you'll need linux (Ubuntu 6.06 Desktop LTS ) or W2K3 host os) ?

How long did you watch the hang? Longer than a few minutes, or less?

Installing the 686 kernel appears to have solved the problem in my case. I documented the process at this Ubuntu thread:

Thank you to all who replied :-)

I experience this NOT under Vmware. I have both Ubuntu Dapper AND Kubuntu Dapper installed on seperate partitions on my laptop (Sony VAIO VGN-FS115e), installing the Server edition to another partition it hangs at UNCOMPRESSING LINUX. What's wrong with it? Is it because it knows I am not using a "real" server ;) ?

The bug report is regarding WinXP + VMWare Workstation + Ubuntu Server; discussions on other platforms, while interesting, are not really applicable to the specific issue mentioned.

There are others on ubuntuforums.org reported identical lockups under the same condition. The culprit appears to be the server kernel in Ubuntu 6.06. If you load [X|K]Ubuntu and use the server kernel, chances are it will also locks up under WinXP/VMWare Workstation.

> have you tried xubuntu ?

Yes, Xubuntu and Ubuntu Desktop works. But such discussion is also irrelevant to the issue at hand; it is about Ubuntu Server, not about Xubuntu or Ubuntu Desktop.

Again not application - see above.

Forever.

The same with Ubuntu 6.06 (Desktop) host os using VMWare Server 1.0.0 build-27828!
All versions of linux-image-server dont work while all versions of linux-image-686 do.

Server kernel is configured with PAE support (i.e. > 4GB support). Not all CPU's support this (Mostly laptops that don't...)

Just about nobody needs it anyway, even on a "server", it makes things slower if you don't need > 4GB of ram (And anyone with > 4GB should get a 64-bit platform anyway ;) )

In any case, the installer should check for support for this bit (/proc/cpuinfo ;) ) and install a non-PAE kernel by default if it isn't supported. Preferably leave PAE for -bigiron where someone might actually need it ;)

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Unfortunately this bug report is being closed because we received no response to the last inquiry for information. However, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . If you are able to confirm this is still an issue with this most recent release please feel free to reopen this report. Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
