Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

Bug:
Wireless connection becomes lost and the wifi message "Authentication required by wireless network" keeps reappearing for no apparent reason. There is no way to reconnect other than restarting the computer.

What should have happened:
The wireless network should stay connected.

What happened instead:
The wireless connection stopped working and returned an error message that can't be resolved unless the whole system is rebooted. (Logging out and logging back in doesn't fix the problem.)

Distro: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala
Package: network-manager
Wifi Device: Linksys WUSB54G
uname -a:
2.6.31-15-generic #50-Ubuntu SMP Tue Nov 10 14:54:29 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

More info:
The message "Authentication required by wireless network" keeps reappearing for no apparent reason. I had already set the saved password in Network Connections -> Wireless so it should remember it. Yet even after it connects successfully on a reboot, a couple hours later it will lose connection and then ask for the same password again.

However, retyping in the password in that error window doesn't fix the problem. And when the user goes to the wireless icon on the Top Panel and clicks "Connect to Hidden Wireless Network", there is no way for the user to click on the final "Connect" button since for some reason it's grayed out. I have attached 2 pictures showing the problem.

Here is the Log info:
Nov 29 15:36:45 ubuntu wpa_supplicant[1204]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS

I should report that I have just the same problem... this is an Acer Aspire 9300, AMD Athlon 64x2, 2 GB DDR2, 528 Mb NVidia GeForce Go 6100, I think wifi is Atheros...

I have the same network manager issue (I think it's network manager, it could be a problem with wpa_supplicant, or the keyrings or something else).

I'm on Karmic, and my wireless driver is iwl3945 (Dell Latitude D820 intel wireless).

I install network manager and it connects for a few reboots. Randomly, it stops logging me into the wireless router (WPA2-PSK), and repeatedly prompts me for a password. I enter the password, but it doesn't connect.

At one point, I un-installed network manager and wpa_supplicant and re-installed it all, and it functioned for a few reboots again and then resumed the same password-prompting behaviour.

Does anyone have a fix for this, or any suggestions as to how to figure out what's going on?

I can't understand why network manager (if the problem is indeed with network manager) has been so buggy for so long, when the rest of the software for Ubuntu is so stable. Networking is the most critical part of any installation. If you can't connect to a network, you can't update any other part of the system.

Is it not being prioritised? Is it not glamourous enough to work on? Is it because the developers are at the mercy of proprietary wireless drivers?

I think I'm going back to wpagui if no one has any ideas (which also lost my settings, but at least would connect correctly if they were re-entered).

Also happening here, in my two (different) laptops, both using Ubuntu 10.10, NetworkManager 0.8.1. Tested on kernels 2.6.34, 2.6.35, and 2.6.36.

The wifi I am connecting to has low signal, because the router is a bit far. I don't know if this is related or not. It uses WEP encryption. In other encrypted networks I have connected this problem is not happening.

Nonetheless, the connection keeps working perfectly in a netbook I have (Windows 7 Starter based). So, it is either driver or NetworkManager problem.

Attached is the output of lspci, lsusb and hwinfo, in case it can be of help.

I have moved closer to the router, and the problem appears now way less frequently, even though it still happens.

So, I think that most definitely it is related to the low signal received. Nonetheless, the Windows computer works perfectly at lower signal quality.

I don't have this version on a computer with wifi any more, so I've
unsubscribed to the bug.

It's completely normal that you lose data on "Windows" platforms.
That's why you have a UNIX or Linux or BSD server for backups.
