LIveCD / installer selects highest screen resolution

Bug Description

When I start the LiveCD, X by default selects the most painful for the eyes screen resolution my 19" CRT can do: 2048x1536@60Hz. A much less hurting resolution must be selected manually.

I don't know if you can distinguish LCDs from CRTs, but maximum screen resulotion should be limited to those which can be run at 85Hz at least for CRTs. Obviously the strategy for LCDs would be different.

We pick the second-highest resolution for CRTs; this is usually a sensible mode. Detecting LCDs vs CRTs is non-trivial and while we do try to detect it, it's not an easy task (so often goes wrong). Rejecting as I believe the current policy is the best we can currently do; you are always free to change the resolution using the "screen resolution" control panel option.

Changed in xresprobe:

This is sensible only for low quality CRT monitors, look at bug #68654

Please, don't reject valid bugs - default 60 Hz refresh rate mode with very small fonts couses damage to users eyes (all compurer safety instructions requires 85 Hz or more, look for example TCO '99 or TCO '03 requirements - http://www.tcodevelopment.com/pls/nvp/Document.Show?CID=1200&MID=100 ), so, current policy is not the best.

Btw, it's very hard to find "screen resolution" control panel option when resolution is 2048x1536@60Hz on 19" CRT because of too small fonts and icons.
Please, try how Ubuntu looks on 19" CRT monitor (wich actual size is less than 18") with 2048x1536@60Hz resolution before rejecting this bug. I'm working as Linux and other free desktop software consultant and get a lot of support requests like in this bugreport - most users simply can't find how to change screen resolution when default resolution is too high and fonts are too small.
I think this bug is a duplicate of bug #68654.
