Here I found a compiled mplayer-vaapi. It had been assembled from this source:
http://www.splitted-desktop.com/~gbeauchesne/mplayer-vaapi/
After install all work out of box on Intel GMA500.

There's an up-to-date version of VLC with VA-API in the Ubuntu 10.10 repositories. Is Mplayer less important? (Honestly, its support seems less organized than VLC.)

Tony, I did not know that. Thanks, I will try to upgrate to VLC 1.1.x.

mplayer is my favorite media player, and having vaapi support out-of-box would be great
BTW, there was recent update (15 Nov 2010) of mplayer-vaapi on Splitted-Desktop:

I don't understand why there is no mplayer-vaapi in any ppa (despite the one in the nvidia cutting edge ppa, which doesn't work for maverick upwards...) :-(

You can check this:
https://launchpad.net/~gma500/+archive/ppa?field.series_filter=maverick

Works perfectly with my Intel GMA500.

You link to a blog posting that explains how to compile mplayer-vaapi from source. It may or may not be a good starting point for the actual packaging, which this bug is about. Unfortunately, it seems nobody has started this yet.

On a personal note, I don't think yet having another copy of mplayer in the archive is a good idea. These changes should really go to the mplayer2 codebase proper.

Agree. I hope VA-API support in mplayer2 will be available this year: http://devel.mplayer2.org/ticket/17

This bug's original description referred to newer ATI cards and Intel ATOM hardware. VA-API on ATI/AMD hardware is/was only available via XvBA. XvBA is buggy and was never widely adopted. However, UVD video decoding acceleration on ATI/AMD hardware is supported via VDPAU in the 3.10 kernel and later, provided that updated firmware is also installed. Ubuntu 13.10 "Saucy Salamander" is based on the 3.11 kernel and includes the updated firmware. Information on how to configure mplayer to always use VDPAU is available at http://askubuntu.com/questions/63682/how-do-i-configure-mplayer-to-always-use-vdpau

Probably no one need this anymore, since mpv is available in repository.
