Bug Description

Writing programs to use git is very slow when constrained to the command line interface. Git since 0.99ish has built a libgit.a static library. Please consider a git-dev package that contains this.

There's already a newer version in Debian unstable, and we should consider pushing this request to Debian BTS.

Luca, have you tested Debian unstable's current version with this patch tweaked (as necessary)?

I forwarded the patch upstream. There was no need to change it, only changelog entry was modified in order to be compatible with Debian package.

Upstream maintainer suggests not to create such package at the moment. See http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.version-control.git/39721.
