Bug Description

If I'm watching something with sound (DVD in this case) and close VLC by clicking the 'Close window' right uppermost window icon, VLC appears to close. However the sound is still player and I have to go into system monitor to manually stop wxvlc.

This bug can be reproduced under other linux distro. VLC development team is aware of the problem so we'll have to wait for the next release.

Did the sound stop with the ogg theora example, after you had closed VLC?

Sorry, sloppy language, I have the same behaviour as you when playing ogg theora files. The sound does stop as expected.

I seem to only have continuing sound with DVD, but I haven't tried VCD and I think I've had this with mpeg files too, but I can't reproduce that now.

The bug happens when I play a directory containing MPEGs or WMVs (at least). With a directory containing MPEGs, even a video window pops up having "VLC (XVideo output)" in the title bar when wxvlc is playing the last video in the directory; closing the window does not kill wxvlc. The VLC version I am using is 0.8.4.

Actually it seems to me that there is no way to quit VLC naturally (so that wxvlc gets killed) after you have opened the "Open Directory..." dialog.

Yes I can Duncan. The command "ps -C wxvlc" shows the wxvlc there, even if I have closed the player (after using the "Open Directory..." dialog).

Yes, I am using 6.06. I don't know how to upgrade to 6.10. Is it impossible to fix the bug in 6.06? I would like to know, how the bug was fixed in 6.10.

I wanted to confirm that this is still happening to me on Edgy with vlc version: 0.8.6.release-0ubuntu1~edgy1

It does not happen every time, but apparently randomly. Most of the time wxvlc closes normally when I click the X icon during playback. But maybe in one of every 4 or 5 cases I can still hear the sound although the window is gone. After "killall wxvlc" the sound stops.

I watch mostly .avi files (xvid encoding), so I'm not sure if it happens with other formats as well. I think it happened also with some .wmv files (cannot check that very easily because it's not reproducible).

My audio output module is set to "Default", I think that should be ALSA. My video output module is "OpenGL video output", I'm using the ATI fglrx drivers that came with edgy.

If you need some more info please ask.

I close vlc using ctrl-x, file > exit and the result is the same, the sound continues after close. I then have to kill wxvlc process to stop it.

It only does this for me when playing a mounted DVD iso. using Open Directory to open the video_ts folder. I tried playing a DVD disc and it did not happen then, or when I used vlc to play wav or mp3 files.

i have this bug ever since upgrading form feisty to gutsy. in about one out of three cases sound keeps playing after i close a vlc instance playing a video. 'killall wxvlc' will stop the sound then. its not a serious thing but it is annoying and a regression (even though other people seem to have had the bug for quite a time now...)

Problem continues with 0.8.6.release.e+x264svn20071224+faad2.6.1-0ubuntu3 / ubuntu 8.04, only that now there is no wxvlc process there but vlc. It continues what it is doing, if you exit after opening a directory; only user interface diappeares. Why is this so hard to fix?

Hi there. I've been following a bug against the Ubuntu Project in Launchpad 'Some *vlc not stopped by 'close window' button' (https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vlc/+bug/54630) ... and I noticed that it doesn't look like there´s a contact person from VLC tracking or seeing this issue. Does VLC have a contact person for VLC in Launchpad?

I've looked here:
https://launchpad.net/vlc
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vlc

I think that using 'Actions > Subscribe to bug mail' will allow someone from VLC to get emails of all VLC bugs, maybe that's something you'd be interested in doing?

Thanks for the great software, I love refering people to it when Winplayer fails, first they love it, and then I explain what OpenSource is!

I just tried VLC 0.9.0 trunk-20080725-0335. Playing a DVD folder is actually broken in that version, however, playing the folder as a "Disk" by using the folder path instead for /dev/scd0 works as expected and the bug cannot be reproduced.

I think that we should still test future VLC versions but there's a lot of chances that this bug is fixed.

Thanks for your suggestion, however I managed to compile 0.9.0 after doing "apt-get build-dep vlc" and adding a few other packages.

I have experienced the exact same issues as you described.
The bug seems to be fixed, but the "Open Directory" is broken.
That is the very feature I need, as i want to test ISO images after I create them with DeVeDe.

Is there another Program that can Open ISO images (or directories) as DVD's?
