Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

This problem is related to bug: 566260 (Fn+F5 and Fn+F6 doesn't modify brightness on Sony VAIO VGN-NW21MF (ATI Mobility 512MB)

I've found that the brightness applet is able to control the brightness on my Sony Vaio VGN-NW21MF, but the applet doesn't seem work with mouse clicks. (i.e. If I open the applet and mouse click anywhere on the bar, the bar disappears with no change to brightness)

The workaround I have is to open the applet, and then either use the mouse's scrollwheel or the keyboard up/down arrows to affect the brightness bar.

That's an interesting trick...
If I do that, open the slider and then right click on help, then mouse clicks work ok and the laptop's screen brightness is correctly affected too...

I can also change brightness in System -> Preferences -> Power Management with no problems...

YES. Ii gets me too, on my little Eee 1015PED. Brightness works fine through other control. I had it in Lucid, and now it's still in Maverick.

This is also affecting me on:

Dell Latitude E4310 Ubuntu 10.10
Sony Vaio VPCEB3C5 Ubuntu 10.10

Do you think, perhaps, I dunno..this could be fixed? It seems to be an open and confirmed bug in Ubuntu and I suspect the fix is going to be trivial. I don't think this is anything to do with hardware, it seems to be a software issue since if you right click after you open the brightness applet it magically works.

Let me guess... this will stay exactly the same for Natty, will it?

Yup, this happens on my Thinkpad T61p running 10.10 x86-64 as well:
* Left-click the applet icon and then try to adjust brightness and slider control is unclickable (and hops to the far left of the screen)
* Left-click and then right-click the icon, then right-click (to drop down the menu) and then right-click again (to clear the menu) and the control works fine.
* The applet is fully controllable with scroll keys, though it is a bit "laggy"
* Brightness is controllable as expected with the hardware keys
