Hi,

I have the same problem on my HP ToucheSmart tm2 Notebook with Core2Duo (64bit). The system uses switchable graphic cards (Intel & ATI). Because the ATI didn't work, I turned off the ATI by this solution: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=7933876&postcount=11

Please let me know if I can provide you any information.

Best regards,
moe

Can confirm this bug on natty (kernel 2.6.38-8-generic). It appears on notebook with switchable graphics. ATI card is not affected. Intel card is affected.

The only way to workaround this bug is to add "nomodeset" option for grub menu. But this cripples the intel driver.

I have found the way to work around this bug without messing up the driver. The kernel options in grub have to be changed from "quiet splash" to "nosplash". Yay! My TTYs are back )

No, this bug is back ( This workaround works no more.
I have to switch card to radeon and then to intel using vgaswitcheroo and this brings the TTYs online.
It seems that something is wrong with KMS and/or vgaswitcheroo.

Hybrid graphics isn't really supported on lucid. You probably should uninstall nvidia and just use Intel if tty access is important.

You could also attempt to turn off kernel modesetting, although I don't recall if that was still an option in lucid.

I think the actual issue here is a kernel conflict between KMS and -nvidia with the TTY's on Lucid so am refiling.

If anyone can reproduce on Precise, please file a new bug about it with 'ubuntu-bug xorg' and we can have another look (hybrid graphics is one of the focus areas for Precise).

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . If possible, please test the latest v3.2-rcN kernel (Not a kernel in the daily directory). Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the others). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed by the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream-KERNEL-VERSION'. For example, if kernel version 3.2-rc1 fixed and issue, the tag would be: 'kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.2-rc1'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'. If you believe this bug does not require upstream testing, please add the tag: 'kernel-upstream-testing-not-needed'.

Thanks in advance.

U-topic, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
