Bug Description

Binary package hint: upstart

I see that computer when boots have pauses without any output and log reports at first 15 seconds of boot process. This pauses exists every boot and at same time (+-second)

Records in dmesg:

The pauses is in 2 to 6 seconds of boot (4 seconds) and in 7-18 seconds (11 seconds).

What does the system wait in this time? I can turn on more debug log?
How I can speed up or disable this processes?

This is almost certainly an issue with your /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume file not matching your swap partition UUID

affects: upstart (Ubuntu) → initramfs-tools (Ubuntu)

I'm affected by this bug too.

The UUID given by /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume is the same as the one in /etc/fstab.

I'm having the same problem, it stops for 14 seconds at that same line.

I can add that the SCSI device that causes the stop is a USB card reader.

I'm under a Acer Laptop. I have it slowing boot over 2 minutes. At the dmesg output, the udev line only comes at 140.966 secs.

I have been using Lucid for a couple of weeks now and the boot times have been very quick, but just today it refused to boot or was booting so slow that I lost patience. It happened two or three times in a row, never coming up. So I booted into recovery mode, did a "sudo shutdown -h now" at the prompt and it booted up fine the next time -- although perhaps a little slowly.

I would not be surprised if this had something to do with usb, as Ubuntu does NOT have usb figured out yet. A quick search will reveal many people having freezing issues, generally with a usb mouse. (The solution was to plug the mouse into and external hub. Why this works I don't know.)

Are the two related? They are certainly both usb issues.

And to be fair to Ubuntu: Linux doesn't seem to have usb down in general. That this should be is a little mystifying as usb is hardly cutting edge technology.

I'm having a very similar problem to what is being described here.

Previously my boot times were very quick, now I'm waiting several minutes before things get going.

uname -a
Linux Hyde 2.6.32-24-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Aug 20 14:21:58 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

And the offending dmesg:
[ 6.372151] scsi 6:0:0:0: Direct-Access Generic- Compact Flash 1.01 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
[ 6.372753] scsi 6:0:0:1: Direct-Access Multiple Flash Reader 1.05 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
[ 6.373064] sd 6:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 0
[ 6.373140] sd 6:0:0:1: Attached scsi generic sg3 type 0
[ 6.375124] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
[ 6.375746] sd 6:0:0:1: [sdc] Attached SCSI removable disk
[ 217.071559] udev: starting version 151
[ 217.079336] lp: driver loaded but no devices found

Looking at the Disk Utility after I finally do boot in I find that sdb and sdc are the card readers.

Another side effect I'm seeing is a huge wait time between the Login Screen and finally getting to the desktop. So I click my User, 20 second pause, I type my password, 2 minute pause or more then I get to my desktop. I'm unsure if these two problems are related.

Now to be honest, I've been doing some development playing with the FTDI FT232RL USB to Serial, so perhaps something with this broke my system. I'll keep playing around, perhaps I can find the culprit.

I can confirm this on my desktop computer (can't add dmesg as I'm currently on my laptop, which seems to work just fine).
1) dmesg shows some huge gaps and
2) when GDM shows, it hangs a long time (20seconds+) where neither mouse nor keyboard are responding - however, all keypresses/mousemovements are handled after the hang
3) after I enter my password, the login is rather slow, but this could also relate to the lots of stuff running on my desktop/server ;-)

As I'm running multiple services (mysql, openssh, apache, mythtv-backend), I thought it might be related to one of those... or the combination of them, but since noone here mentioned one of these, its probably not the case. To the best of my knowledge, I don't have card readers (but I have to check).

I do have the same initial problem. The pause in 7-18 seconds. I tried to disable usb support by appending "nousb" to the kernel line in the grub boot menu by pressing "e". However this doesn't do the trick for me. Can you confirm that. Probably the pause doesn't have anything to do with usb [sdb] at all.

Same problem here with the most recent mainline kernel 3.1.4 for oneiric ocelot (11.10). While I do have a USB card reader attached, disconnecting it does *not* influence the time gap at boot time.
