Bug Description

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

I think this is related to Pulse as sound is not present every time and pulse can't see my sound card. Sometimes when I shut down my computer and start it again later lucid boots with no sound and no volume indicator applet in the panel and sound devices detected under sound preferences. In addition to this the shutdown applet is grayed out and I cannot shutdown or restart the computer. I am still able to logout, but shutdown and restart do not respond on the login dialog either. The only way to restart or shut down is via the command line and only with root access enabled. When I do $sudo su then $reboot it restarts normally with everything working fine, but will occasionally freeze the system completely including the system clock with the fans spinning up high and a hard reset with the power button as the only option to restart the system. I have tried all of the fixes from the ubuntu forums from :

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1476257

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1466589

My problem sounds different than all of these because 1.) I do not have Open Office running at all during start-up. 2.) It does not kick me back to login. 3.) No one on any of these threads has reported sound problems. 4.) ACPI work around changes nothing. 5.) They report icon for shutdown gone from panel and can restore it, mine is present and grayed out. 6.) Mine happens at random after a full shutdown and ALWAYS features the traits listed above.

Except mine doesn't log me out and has nothing to do with the nvidia driver
as uninstalling changes nothing and adding my user to the audio group didn't
fix the sound problem.

Felipe can you post your system info? Are you running a core i7 x85 mother board or do you have this audio card: Card hw:0 'Intel'/'HDA Intel at 0xf7ff8000 irq 22'
   Mixer name : 'Realtek ALC889'
   Components : 'HDA:10ec0889,14627593,00100004'

Also what kind of GPU are you running. I have an Nvidia 250gts. I saw another person post in their add on to your bug that they also had an nvidia card since they suggested removing the proprietary driver. While this didn't fix anything for me, I'm wondering if we all have have nvidia cards. I'm asking because I don't want to file this on pulse if it's not pulse related.

Hi, I believe that I am suffering from the same problem this bug reports - very frustrating. Symptoms are IDENTICAL to those described - greyed-out shutdown and restart, 'random occurence', sound loss, - I would like to enquire about another trait which i also have when this situation occurs - namely when I try to mount an external drive, I receive a 'not authorised' message.

Can shut down via terminal with 'su' priviledges - still, miss my sound and need to mount my external drive!

My system is an old IBM t43 laptop, unmodified from production model.

Confirmed I also lose admin privileges for mounting external drives and
flash media. Sounds like we both have the same bug. Our systems are
significantly different too so this is definitely not hardware specific. I
am running a year old core i7 desktop. The only possible option could be if
my on board sound uses a similar driver to your laptop or if we are both
using the latest nvidia driver. Can you post your sound specs and let me
know if you're using the nvidia driver?

Same problem here in two different laptops. One is a Dell Inspiron 15R, intel p6600, 3gb ram and intel HD graphics. The second is an old Toshiba 1564, with 1Gb ram and running an AMD Turion X2. Problem happens few times and can only fix it by forcing a restart.

Hi, I have exactly the same problem on my old laptop HP nx6125(AMD Sempron 3100+ with ATI gfx card) with clean installation of Ubuntu 10.04.
No OpenOffice, no NVidia driver - from time to time problems with sound and shutdown/reboot. After forcing restart all goes ok.

Hi,

Exactly the same problem here.

Ubuntu version is 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx).

Hardware:
HP Compaq nc6000, ATI Mobility Radeon 9600, AC'97 ICH4 Intel audio controller.

From time to time the system starts with no sound, no shutdown permissions and no drive mounting permissions. If I recall correctly, there was a similar bug once in Fedora. It had sth to do with some kind of a helper. Wish I could be more like one :)

Its been plaguing me since i upgraded my eeepc to 10.04. My theory is some PolicyKit, or Hal config file did not get properly upgraded.

I have very similar problem on my Dell Latitude D620 with Lucid. A workaround with the sound seems to be to delete the pulse directory (i.e. rm -rf ~/.pulse) shut down and restart. The only way to shut down after sound failure is from the command line (i.e. sudo shutdown -h now). I have had the problem ever since upgrading from Hardy to Lucid in April. I have never been able to consistently reproduce. The problem may have something to do with power management. If I start on AC, pull the plug and run on battery for awhile and shut down, the problem is likely to recur. I have never seen the problem on a Dell Dimension Desktop that always runs from AC. I seldom if ever see it when running the Latitude laptop from AC for repeated startup and shutdown, Before a recent kernel upgrade (I do not remember which one) CUPS and the VirtualBox kernel module would not load properly after the restart. CUPS and VirtualBox load fine now, unaffected by the sound driver problems. I believe there is something wrong in power management and the kernel.
